Do not stay in the sidings rooms

The sidings rooms truly let down what is an otherwise lovely hotel . Just pay the extra money and just stay in the main hotel. These rooms are in the conference centre annexe of the hotel (basically a concrete block down the end of the car park) and I was a bit shocked at quite how different they were to the main hotel. It was like staying in an entirely different (cheaper) hotel to the main building. I was initially given a room on the ground floor, which looked directly into the entry foyer (see the picture attached). I found it quite shocking that they think anyone would be ok with staying in this room, as there is absolutely no privacy whatsoever? I asked to move and was given a better room on a higher level, but it was still a pretty bleak outlook onto the royal mail centre and a road with ongoing construction works. Staff were helpful throughout though. Overall, the sidings annexe feel more like a premier inn than a 4* hotel - it doesn't feel like part of the main hotel at all and they really let down what is otherwise a lovely hotel. There isn't a huge price difference, but the quality difference is vast, so just stay in the main hotel.

We loved our 2 rooms here. Beds were super comfortable, amenities were fantastic, food was tasty, we liked the history and decor, & we had great rooms with garden views. It was also nice to say someplace right next to the train station (especially since we brought my senior parents) and have the option of leaving luggage and exploring the city before check in / not taking your luggage all over town. For those driving, the car park / parking lot seem to be large enough to accommodate many visitors.

Lovely hotel friendly and helpful staff, I was just there one night but my stay was great and a lovely pool 😁 very nice comfy bed, can't comment on food as did not eat at hotel but menu looks good, one comment I thought a bit pricey.

Hotel itself was really nice. Close to the city centre and plenty of parking. But I wouldn't recommend staying in the annex/sidings. Its a bit like the hotel rooms time forgot. Stains everywhere, cracked tiles, broken seals and ancient noisy plumbing.

Public areas excellent style and space. Staff all excellent except reception clerk who totally unhelpful when our room unacceptable. Bedroom appalling : cell-like grey 12 sqft including tiny 'washroom' with malfunctioning shower and slight sewage smell from washbowl. Only furniture/fittings = bed and 3ft wide plywood cupboard filled with large fridge on large safe and ironing board, no hanging clothes space. Empty space with plumbing pipes where possible missing worktop. No chair, and when I asked for one a metal office chair arrived. Request for other room rejected (unavailable?).

Stayed for 2 nights from 31st July - 2nd Aug, with my Niece. Grand exterior. Disappointed on first night. Loose bath tap. Crack on the bathroom wall, trim loose on shower. Stains over the carpet, which had been covered over with dustbin! Reported tap on first day. Lady said she'd log it. Woken up at 7am. After a gap of roughly 1cm of the window open, that wouldn't close. So we could hear workmen. Reported to hotel reception & asked to change rooms. Lovely lady apologised & said we could change rooms at 3pm. Much better. Nice, clean, quiet room. I thanked her for her help & again she apologised. 99 percent of staff were very friendly & helpful & very curteous. Before our journey home today, we decided to pop into the Garden Lounge. Very nicely set out. I went to the counter to order myself a beverage. The young man in question said a waiter/waitress would come to me. As it was table service. He said there's several people before you, is that ok? I said this was fine! After going back & forth around the lounge. Then starting to clear tables & ignoring me. After 45 mins, I asked politely if i could now order my coffee. He didnt apologise for keeping me waiting. When i went to the counter. The young lady was very polite & apologised for my delay. At the end of the day. It's only a cup of coffee. However I was a guest at the hotel. Very unprofessional young man! The hotel itself is nicely set out with lounges & function rooms.

Paid for a room with garden view and upgraded just before our stay but appear to have lost the garden view in the process, instead having a view of the train station roof. We won’t be back to hotel when we stay in York later this year.

We booked this hotel to be close to the Railway Station. The room allocated couldn't have been further away. On check out the receptionist tried to blame us , telling us that we Should have been aware that the room was in an Annex. At the price charged this was very poor value for money. Not impressed
