Charming and comfortable

Charming and comfortable small hotel. Super helpful and pleasant staff. Great location, it was a 30 minute scenic walk to the Aquarium and Cannery Row and a five minute drive. Great restaurants are steps away. My room was small but comfortable and pretty. I was in the historic side. It was slightly inconvenient getting to the elevator but worth it for me.

The property is older with a historic feel. If you like a more rustic style, you will enjoy this place. But if you are looking for something more like the Plaza or Portola, this place might not be right for you. That being said, here are some things to know. The staff is amazing! They are very attentive and friendly. They want your stay to be the best experience possible. This makes up for some of the pitfalls. For starters, self parking is not available. But valet parking is available for a fee. So if you are going to self park, you have three options. There is a public parking structure across the street on the backside of the hotel. There is also a public parking structure across the street on the frontside and to the west of the hotel. The first structure (backside) has above and below ground stalls. Which is good for oversized vehicles. And when it comes to the below ground structures, your height is pretty much limited to 6’8”. The final option is park on the street. Which has various rules depending on the location. The other disappointment is the continental breakfast. They use to have a nice little breakfast nook for guests to get a cup of coffee and a pastry, fruit or cereal. Yet, it is now limited to coffee. That little extra touch meant a lot to me during my first stay. Anyhow, all in all it’s a nice little gem in the downtown area of Monterey. If you give it a try, I hope you enjoy it as I have on a couple occasions.

There were no toothbrushes and toothpaste in the room. There were also no dressing gowns, but maybe there shouldn't be. But the kids should definitely be. Very bad sound insulation, everything is very audible from the next room. And also there is no information about the deposit on the website.

We will be back!

The hotel was perfectly located in the historic Monterey area and an easy walk to the Ward! It’s a super fun and quite different! A mini fridge would have been helpful, and the little heater knob is a bit tricky to find if you’re not sure what to look for, but nothing to worry about. We loved it and will be back!

I am over 70. Walked to the Monterey Hotel in the dark from the transit station about 4-6 blocks away with a rolling suitcase. People on the street were kind and helpful. Felt PERFECTLY safe and sound. Amazing for a downtown environment! Lost my phone on the train. The people at the Monterey Hotel gave me Amtrak's number, and took messages for me from my family for 2 days. So if you are like me, online, looking for a safe great place to stay for a reasonable price, this is your place. Nice coffee and fruit set up in the morning. The only noise I heard were the seagulls squawking in the morning! The lady at the desk gave me a wonderful recommendation for a breakfast place, and directions for public transportation. Went to Lover's Point and Cannery Row for the day, and had a marvelous town. Monterey is an awesome place to visit with kind, helpful and courteous service people from the bus drivers to the restaurants, tourist places, and hotel.
