We stayed here on a family vacation during spring break. I called ahead of time and knew our room was on the old side of the building. We had a suite with 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a living area , dining area and a small kitchen with a mini fridge and microwave. The size of the room was the reason i booked it, with plenty of room for us to spread out we had 2 balconies, directly across from the pool and had access to a covered parking garage. Plenty of restaurants, shopping, and sights to see within walking distance. My only complaints was that our room slept 6 people, but was not furnished for 6. There was 1 pull out couch, a bench and a couple chairs on the patio and around the table, the outlets in both bathrooms were not working, and the lighting was bare minimum in the dining area. Luckily, we werent there to sit on our room and had an amazing time. If we go back to LaJolla, i would stay here again!

We stayed in the renovated side of the hotel (Pines). The room was very nice and the ocean view was amazing. Lots of dining options without walking distance and treat shops for the kids. The hotel pool/hot tub was a little hard to find and seemed to be shared with nearby condos but still nice and relaxing. I would recommend staying only if you're going to stay in the renovated side. There is a definite difference between the two... and it's evident even from looking at the hotel from outside. Overall pleased and will return.

The room was very old (popcorn ceilings, 50 year old rugs) and mildewy. The pool and hot tub looked nice but were closed when we tried to use them (the morning before we checked out). They were unapologetic about. The windows lacked screens and there were many seagulls lurking about, so we couldn't really get fresh air.

A few days prior to our arrival, they offered to upgrade us to a 2 bedroom suite with ocean views for an extra $40. We got basically a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom condo in the bungalow section of the hotel with a kitchenette, two balconies, and ocean views. That part was excellent. It feels like about half of the hotel has been renovated and half is in desperate need of renovation. Unfortunately, our suite was in the part that needs reno. The couch was kinda old and not super comfortable. The bathroom light in one of the bathrooms was a little touchy; the switch had to be wiggled a bit at times to get it to actually turn on. There were no light switches on walls and no overhead lights, so the place felt a little dark at night. The service was excellent and we loved using the heated pool and hot tub each night! The property is very close to this little sea lion cove, children's beach (seals), and very walkable to lots of different restaurants. If we stay here again, we may try to request one of the more updated rooms. Overall, the hotel is great, but very outdated.

The only good thing about this place was the location. The rooms and property was extremely old and seemed as they cut corners on expenses as much as possible. I have paid much less for much nicer rooms before.

Mixed feelings about this stay. Michael was helpful when we first checked in & gave great customer service. View is 10/10 but the room itself is not worth the price by a long shot. One elevator was out of service so with a wedding on the rooftop, we were forced to take the stairs…our room was on the 4th floor. Pool - all towels were used & dirty so I had to return to the office (via stairs) to get towels/service at the pool…did I mention the room is not worth the price? Run down, old, thin mattress…needs updating. Bottom line- would not recommend.

2 different hotels in one.

The pictures are incredibly deceiving. There are two sides to the hotel, one looks like the pictures of the nicer side and one does not fully show the other side. The rooms are completely different. The beds on the lesser side are not comfortable and even the coffee in the room is different. You cannot beat the location and the coffee shop downstairs is great. Just be aware of what side you are booking.

Great view but needs some attention

The balcony door requires two people to open it. The door to the room does not close properly and needs some attention. The bathroom toilets are outdated, reminiscent of the last century. Considering the price, more care should be taken to improve these issues.
