Treat yourself to an island escape in South East Queensland. When you stay in one of our South Stradbroke Island hotels, you'll be so absolutely flawed by the tranquility of the unspoilt natural surroundings that you may never want to leave!Things to do
South Stradbroke Island, known as "Straddie" by locals, is one of the only places on Australia's east coast where you can watch the sun rise and set over the water. Straddie's other claim to fame is that it is one of only 15 sand islands in the whole world. In addition to this, the entire island is preserved as a Conservation Park and if you take a walk through the bush, you'll see a diverse range of plants, including mangroves and paperbark trees. While you're here, see if you can spot the extremely rare Golden Swamp Wallaby and Short-beaked Echidna.
After checking out the island's flora and fauna, it's time to make good use of the 22km of coastline. Swim in the calm waters on the western side of the island or go kite-surfing, sea kayaking, windsurfing, parasailing, fishing, snorkeling and scuba diving before heading over to the other side of the island for some awesome surf action. You'll virtually have the barrels to yourself as there are heaps of secluded surf beaches here and not nearly as many surfers.Shopping and dining
Besides a mini kiosk, there aren't any shops on the island, so you'll have to grab your essential items before leaving the mainland. And when it comes to dining, if you don't have any luck catching your dinner, you can sit down for a great meal at Tipplers Licenced Cafe.Getting here and around
The only way to access South Stradbroke Island is via the Gold Coast, so grab a seat on one of our cheap flights to the Gold Coast and then hire a boat from the Runaway Bay Marina to get here. Keep in mind that there aren't any vehicles on the island, so you'll have to go exploring on foot or by boat.So what's the hold up?
