The double room was more spacious than expected and very clean. Amenities such as coffee and tea are provided, and two bottles of drinking water are replenished daily. Breakfast is excellent and is served a la carte at the neighboring Spagnoletti restaurant. Some people complain about noise from the subway that runs beneath the hotel, but my room was on the first floor and I didn't experience any noise there.

The hotel is well located close to kings cross. Staff were friendly and helpful. Room was simple but clean, stylish and well-equipped. However, beware that many rooms (including the double room I was in) are in the basement where the underground can be heard very loudly through the night.

Room was nothing like was pictured above. Was on the lower ground floor Room 101. The bathroom was extremely dated, however shower was good. Immediately we could hear people walking around on the upper level which was reception so that continued into the early hours and first thing in the morning. We could hear the underground going past well into the early hours. We could hear staff talking at reception through the ceiling, baring in mind reception is open 24/7. In the morning we were woken again at 6am by other guests and staff due to thin walls and walking around upstairs, the cleaners were extremely noisy in the morning as the cleaning cupboard was opposite. They were slamming doors and shouting between themselves. We were then woken again by the fire alarm going off at 8:00, we were not informed there would be a test before hand. As we left the room we had to navigate around all the cleaners equipment and other rooms dirty bin bags. To access the stairs. There was a sign in the desk stating a fire alarm test would be done the Monday, but this was the Sunday. Wouldn’t stay here again and have had much better experiences at bigger brands, I didn’t feel especially safe staying here

Room was good, matress comfortable but the floor was dirty and there was no light switch by the beds, or a lamp. I found this highly uncomfortable and risky, as there was a step between the beds area and the rest of the room. Regarding the floor, I spilled a bit of drinking water so I used the feet mat to dry it and the mat was really dirty after! Also, no hooks or rails for the towels.

A basic hotel but that is what we paid for. A solid option with very friendly and helpful staff. The steep steps into the bathroom are not for the faint hearted and the walls are very thin! But a good option if on a budget. Excellent location

California Hotel was a disappointing experience. The bedroom was small. The bathroom was small. The fixtures were of poor quality. There weren't any hand towels and the bath towels (one per person) were very small. There were very few complimentary items such as soap (which was out of reach if you were to take a bath) and coffee. The pillows were hard. The room was extraordinarily hot. In the bathroom, both sink and bath plugs were damaged. The bath was very small. There was limited shelving. The space for the toilet was very tight. Noise from other rooms was too easily heard, as was the noise from the cleaning staff talking loudly in the morning. To say this is a 2 star hotel would be a generous assessment. Positives were: Pleasant receptionists and reception area. Location.

Buyer beware. Photos do not show how small the rooms really are. A family room barely has room to walk. There is no lift. Don’t plan on bringing luggage. The room has no ventilation.
