Planning a well-deserved break in Hong Kong? Our Aberdeen hotels on Hong Kong Island will place you a stone's throw away from the heritage-rich Aberdeen Harbour, with unreal views of junk boats as well.
HistoryAberdeen is the landing place of the first Europeans to arrive in Hong Kong way back in the 1800s. In fact, the township of Aberdeen was actually called "Hong Kong" but the new European visitors misunderstood the locals and thought that the entire island was called "Hong Kong", so they had to come up with a new name for the town and they settled on "Aberdeen". In more recent history, Aberdeen Harbour was featured in a few blockbuster films, including a James Bond movie and one of Bruce Lee's flicks.
Things to doAberdeen has always been a boating and fishing town, despite the fact that it's now surrounded by modern high-rises and contemporary attractions. Spend some time down at the harbour and you'll be amazed by the junks (traditional-style sailing boats) which bob along beside speed boats and state-of-the-art yachts. The harbour is definitely the most popular tourist attraction but it isn't just a pretty sight; these fishermen on these junk boat are hard at work supporting the insatiable appetite for seafood that the locals seem to have. To truly appreciate how hard the fishermen work, you're best off hiring a small boat and heading out onto the water for yourself. You'll get some incredible photo opportunities too.
Shopping and diningAlthough you may not want to make any purchases here, the fish market along the Promenade is a great place to gain some insight into the local culture. If you're keen to do some serious shopping though, you're best off heading into the Hong Kong City Centre.
Make sure you head out to Jumbo Kingdom at least once while you're here. This is the world's largest floating seafood restaurant but there's much more than just seafood on offer. You can feast on delicious Cantonese and Chinese dishes, alongside 2,000 other diners (now you know why those fishermen work so hard), or just relax in the tranquil tea garden.
Getting here and aroundAberdeen is about 45 minutes from Hong Kong Airport, so nab a seat on one of these cheap flights to Hong Kong and then get around by train, bus or boat.
Don't put it off a moment longer. Book your Aberdeen accommodation with us now and live up every lastminute in Hong Kong!
