As a new visitor to this destie, the easiest way to approach Delhi is to understand there are two main parts: Old Delhi and New Delhi. Old Delhi is brimming with 17th century architecture and the Islamic remnants of years past, as well as some of Delhi’s most amazing sights. You absolutely must check out the mighty Red Fort and then Jama Masjid, India’s largest and most jaw-dropping mosque. And if you’re keen for the craziest of crowds, def check out Chandni Chowk, one of the city’s oldest markets. You may have to push your way through crowds as tight as the crowd at your fave music festival and dart between traffic to cross the road, but that’s half the fun! And there are tonnes of fascinating little alleyways to explore.
New Delhi is the modern city centre, built by the British during their reign. Much more spacious than Old Delhi, there are tree-lined boulevards and avenues, and it’s a prime shopping area (wink, wink). The heart of New Delhi is Connaught Place, a sprawling circular market made up of two rings of shops selling everything from jewellery to tailored suits and well-known international brands. And of course, like everywhere around Delhi, there are plenty of hawkers selling food, handmade crafts and random bits and bobs for unique Indian souvenirs to send home. But don’t get too caught up shopping! You must also check out Rajpath, the ceremonious park-lined boulevard that stretches between two other sights to add your list: India Gate and the Presidential Palace. This is also where you’ll find most of Delhi’s museums, including the National Museum – one of the largest in
India!
Outside of these two main areas, there are stacks more sights around Delhi. Suss out the ruins of six cities that preceded Old Delhi, including Qutb Minar and Tughlugabad, as well as the remnants of the tradition of Mughal garden tombs, like Humayun’s Tomb and Safdarjang’s Tomb. There are also many amazing temples like the unique Lotus Temple, which provides a beautiful and peaceful change from the bustling city streets. While Delhi isn’t as modern as
Mumbai when it comes to nightlife and dining, there are some great restaurants around, as well as cocktail bars and cute cafes that suit a Western taste in this land of amazing curries. But if you’re really needing a Western escape from the craziness – and some luxury designer shopping – head to DLF Emporio. It’s full of the world’s top designer garments, and has a level dedicated to Indian designers that’s just mesmerising.
Delhi will blow your mind, even if just for the pace of life as it passes you by. Come and explore the ancient architecture, shop your heart out in the markets and modern shops, and simply wander the busy traffic-laden streets to soak up the hectic vibe.
