Things to do
Coffs Harbour's iconic Big Banana is a must-visit and no trip here would be complete without taking a selfie in front of the fruity fibreglass icon. There's a lot more to this place, though. You can take a walk through the banana plantation and explore the skywalk for fantastic views of the ocean, then zoom back down on a toboggan. Afterwards, sit down for a treat in the cafe – all items on the menu are banana-related, of course – but don't leave until you've tried one of the famous frozen chocolate-dipped bananas on a stick.
Wildlife lovers and bird watchers will enjoy wandering through the Muttonbird Island Nature Reserve, which, although it's an island, is connected to the Coffs mainland by a breakwater wall. There's also a viewing platform on the island where you can watch whales between June and November.
Dolphin Marine Magic is where you can kiss seals and dolphins before they perform in the Marine Discovery Presentation. After the show, handfeed the seals as well as some Little Blue Penguins. If you've got a bit of extra cash, you can also swim with the seals and dolphins, or even take a ride on one of the dolphins!
Artistic types will enjoy spending a few hours at the Bunker Cartoon Gallery, which displays the Southern Hemisphere's largest collection of contemporary black and white cartoons. The gallery is actually a former RAAF World War II bunker (hence the name), so the history of the room makes the art hanging on the walls all the more interesting.
If you're keen for some action and adventure, there are plenty of operators in the area offering scuba diving, skydiving and surf rafting, as well as seasonal whale watching boat tours.
For a more laid-back day, just laze about on one of the little beach coves, scattered along the coast. You won't have any trouble finding a strip of sand to call your own and, at times, it'll almost feel like you've got your own private beach to yourself.
If you're keen to do some shopping, you can head to Park Beach Plaza or The Promenade, which overlooks Coffs Creek. There's also the weekly Growers' Market on Thursdays, if you want to munch on some fresh local produce.
When it comes to wining and dining, you can't beat the al fresco cafes and restaurants along "The Jetty Strip". Whether it's a big brekkie, a light lunch, afternoon tapas, a sumptuous dinner or a little nightcap, you're bound to find something to satisfy your appetite here.
