History

Suvarnabhumi Airport was only built in 2006 and is often lovingly referred to as "Swampy Airport" because it was built upon a cobra swamp! You won't find any cobras around here anymore though - just thousands of travellers.

Things to do

If you're here on business, the Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Centre (BITEC) isn't far away, plus the CBD can be reached by a 15 minute ride on the Sky Train.

Inside the airport there are plenty of shops, restaurants and cafes to kill time, but why hang around inside when there's so much to do nearby?

Catch a soccer game at the Rajamangala Stadium or jump in a taxi and explore the outskirts of the city. Less than an hour from the airport, you'll find a cluster of interesting attractions, including the Erawan Elephant Museum, the Thai Naval Museum and the world's largest croc farm, Samut Prakarn Crocodile Farm. Another fascinating place is the Ancient City, which replicates Thailand in miniature form, throughout different periods of history.

Shopping and dining

Once you've stocked up on duty free items, you can continue your shopping outside of the airport at the 100 year old floating market, Nakhon Nueang Ket Riverside Market (open every Saturday and Sunday morning) or the Mahanakorn Floating Market (open every day).

The floating markets are also ideal spots for indulging in traditional Thai dishes, but you'll find little restaurants and street vendors dotted all around the place, so make sure you fill up on all the Pad Thai, Tom Yum Goong and green curry goodness you can handle.

Getting here and around
