Holidays in Pec

When chucking a sickie becomes way too simple, it's time to break free from the nine-to-five and say hello to Pec!

It's situated close to two of Serbia's best cities. Journey 90 kilometres west to check out the action at Podgorica. Alternatively, go southeast 120 kilometres to find Skopje.

Mother Nature's splendour is on display around Pec. Just 25 kilometres away, Mirusha Waterfalls is a wonderful place to start. Prokletje State Park sits 35 kilometres away and is another ideal spot for a bit of downtime.

If your time here happens to coincide with a huge dump of snow, you'll see many powder fiends packing up their cars and heading over to Kapaonik Touristic Center.

The Sultan Murad II Mosque and the Kurtagić Mosque are close to the middle of Rozaje Municipality, 20 kilometres to the northwest of Pec. Why not head there and take a look?

Whether it's for a bit of retail therapy or to explore the sights, locals and visitors alike often make their way over to Prizren, 60 kilometres to the southeast. Prizren Fortress, Sezai Surroi Sports Center and Maksut Pasha Mosque are all close at hand. That being said, you shouldn't miss out on the Sinan Pasha Mosque and the Albanian League of Prizren Museum [Muzeu Lidhja Shqiptare e Prizrenit] either.

Your eyes shouldn't get to have all the fun while visiting Kosovo. Give your taste buds a little loving too by indulging in some of the local food and drink. After all, you haven't really experienced a place until you've tasted its flavours.

Curious about a few of the surprises you'll find on your dinner plate? There's a high chance they'll include cabbage, onion or both.

There's no need to agonise over the menu while in Pec. Dive straight in and devour some of the region's most loved dishes, such as karadordeva (stuffed veal) and pecenje na raznju (spit-roasted meat).

You could be eating yourself into a larger pair of trousers, but orascine (walnut pastry) is worth it. This beloved dessert will put your taste buds into overdrive at the sight of it.

For fans of a good pint, head to the nearest bar and ask for Ruski Kvas. It's best enjoyed alongside some storytelling and socialising with the locals.

Learning how to say even just a handful of words in the local tongue will make travelling through the Kosovo region that little bit smoother. You may be glad you learnt 'Hvala', which translates as 'thank you'. 'Srećno', which means 'good luck', is also rather common.

You can expect excitement in the air leading up to the 15th of February. The locals will be making preparations for National Day, a day of nation-wide celebrations.

Before you pack up and say "Vidimo se kasniјe!", why not spend the last bits of your holiday allowance and treat yourself to some souvenirs of Pec?

The nearest terminal is Pristina International Airport (PRN). When you're ready to pack your bag and hit the skies, head 60 kilometres to the east.
