HistoryVarious groups of indigenous Americans lived in the area for many years before the arrival of Europeans in the 16th century. The first permanent settlement was created in 1598. Other Spanish settlements grew, and the area was a part of New Spain for several years, before becoming part of Mexico. The north eastern part of the state was sold to the USA in the early 1800s, with many other parts being given to the US following the Mexican-American War. The New Mexico Territory was created in 1850, and this contained lots of the current states of New Mexico, Arizona, and Colorado. New Mexico became the 47th state of the USA in January 1912.
Things to doThere are heaps of opportunities to get out and enjoy nature and the varied landscapes – there are expansive deserts, towering mountains, dense forests, raging rivers, and craggy cliffs. The enormous national forests are home to a vast array of wildlife. Some favourites include the Santa Fe, Lincoln, Gila, and Carson National Forests. A long Native American history and a predominantly Hispanic population have helped to create a wonderfully diverse and interesting culture. There are many monuments to admire including Aztec Ruins.
