A Depreciated Asset

Back to Bostonian after 30 years. Time has not been good to one of our best, go to, spots in Boston. We remember the Bostonian and Seasons Restaurant as the homes of Jasper White, Lydia Shire et al. Today, thss ad t exceptional venue is an afterthought and it is very sad. Additionally, the rooms are an absolute mess! Broken windows, wallpaper coming down and VERY tired decor. Obviously, nobody seems to care with ownership. We had dinner next door at the new Canopy Hotel that was fabulous! As Thomas Wolfe once said, “you can’t go home again”, sadly. I will say that the staff was quite good but, they knew of the problems.

Non functioning telephone and safe in room. Handle on the shower feel off during a shower. HOT WATER!! Room service INEFFECTIVE AND POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE. It was expected tjat tje workers would be able to communicate in English, however NOT the case. Issues reported first day, no attempt by staff to fix. Check out clerk was told all of the above. She did make some adjustments to my final bill. Appreciated that, but, it did not make the stay a great one. Which is what I had expected. I wont recommend or stay at the Bostonian in the future.

A Fine May Stay at The Bostonian

I had returned to Boston from Ireland on a beatifully clear evening. Taking the Silver Line as far as Boston's World Trade Center. I chose to walk along Seaport Blvd towards 26 North Street. A round moon was rising over the city as I crossed over waterways to reach sites that compose part of the Freedom Trail, eventually entering the courtyard with a gushing fountain and checking in at The Bostonian. They had everything ready for me at the front desk, handed me a letter of welcome, two complimentary bottles of water, and the Millenium cards (keys) to my room, #516. Besides the impressive view of the market and the moon, I enjoyed a quiet, very clean apartment with coffee and snacks, if you wanted them, and access to anything one might wish to see on a Samsung cable ready screen. The bed had crisp, clean sheets and I slept comfortably. In the morning I also took pleasure in eating a relaxed breakfast of cranberry juice and a delicious blueberry, strawberry, granola and yogurt parfait prepared in the restaurant adjacent to the hotel entrance. Earlier coffee was also available to guests in the lounge near the elevators. All personnel were competent, communicative, and very friendly whom I encountered throughout my visit.

An OK stay

I was average, across the board. When I showed up to check in early after a red eye from Ca- they told me my res was cancelled! They were friendly, but told me to get the same rate, I’d have to rebook through my travel app. Then, the first room they put me in, even though I paid for a view, assigned me a 2nd fl room that was in the back & overlooked the parking lot & garbage bins. I had to ask them to move me to get me the room I paid for. I actually had a res of 2 rooms because a friend was coming to stay from another part of MA. There was nothing terrible about the room once I was there, it was all slightly outdated, but average. I selected the hotel because it was my friend’s favorite when she visits. Not my favorite, but good enough when you just need a room in a great location. It was good enough.

We were stuck in their elevator for an incredibly long time and had to be rescued by the fire department. When we finally got out, not a single hotel staff member was around. We had to call management to them, because the front desk (who we had called to tell we were stuck) never told them someone was stuck in the elevator. Additionally, after we first called the front desk, we never heard back from them, so we called for an update, a different employee answered, and they ended up calling the fire department because the first employee we spoke never did, nor did they even tell anyone we were stuck.
