History
The name ‘Mudgee’ is of Aboriginal origin and it means a Nest in the Hills. The first settlers arrived in the early 1800s, and there were some violent clashes between migrants and indigenous tribes. The community quickly grew during the Gold Rush, and a number of heritage sites remain today.
Things to do
Stroll around Mudgee and admire the numerous historic colonial architecture, especially the old buildings like the railway station, the police station, the Court House, St Mary’s Church, the old Post Office and Burrundulla. The Mudgee Museum is a great place to learn more about the town’s history and heritage, and there is an aviation museum in the airport. Nearby wineries make for really lovely days out, and you can indulge in a fine selection of locally-produced wines incredible food. Each year in September there is a great wine festival. If you are around in April you can join in the fun at the Wings, Wheels, and Wine celebrations. There are some stunning national parks within easy reach of the town, perfect for hiking and nature spotting. As darkness falls, turn your gaze skywards and check out the stars at the Mudgee Observatory.
Shopping and dining
Mudgee’s fertile land grows some delicious produce, and you can enjoy the very freshest ingredients in the local restaurants and cafes. Several farm shops sell fresh produce and you can also pick up some tasty treats at the markets. Try honey, mustard, jam, olive oil, and more. The local cheese and wine trail lets you combine the best of two amazing taste sensations.
