Holidays in Wakikata

Tired of scrolling through other people's holiday pics while gobbling down your brekkie? Then book a getaway to Wakikata and start your days among the striking coastal plains of Hokkaido.

It's located 810 kilometres north of Japan's capital, Tokyo.

You don't have to be on the road all day to soak up some nature. Just 30 kilometres out of Wakikata, Shikotsu-Toya National Park is a great place to enjoy some fresh air. More peaceful surrounds are waiting for you at Noboribetsu Hot Spring, 45 kilometres away.

Take time to discover the lovely landscapes of Fukidashi Park. It's an excellent place to spend a couple of hours on a pleasant day.

Located 40 kilometres away, Sapporo Dome is a favourite for baseball devotees. Pack a few pieces of teal, gold and black, and time your visit with an exciting game featuring the home team, the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters. You can also throw your support behind the second home team, the Consadole Sapporo.

There's nothing quite like rising with the sun and getting in some fresh turns at Rusutsu Resort. Once you've experienced all the trails there, pack up your gear and test your skills at Niseko Mountain Resort Grand Hirafu.

How do you like the sound of Mount Yotei and Kyogoku Spring Water Village? These awesome attractions are in Kyogoku-cho, just 5 kilometres west of Wakikata. Or maybe Lily Park and Makkarigawa Kasenkoen are more your thing? To visit them, travel to Abuta, 17 kilometres southwest.

Whether it's for a bit of retail therapy or to take in the sights, travellers often take a day trip to Niki-cho, 35 kilometres to the northwest. The Fruits Park Niki, the Yoichi Wine Brewery and the Yoichi Space Dome are close by. That being said, make sure you don't miss the Nikka Whiskey Distillery Yoichi and Yamamoto Sightseeing Orchard either.

Discover the region's scenery from a different angle and try a bit of mountain climbing or hiking. They're both popular pastimes around these parts.

When it comes time to pack up your belongings, spend the last of your holiday allowance and wave "後でお会いしましょう (Atode o ai shimashou)" to Wakikata.

New Chitose Airport (CTS), the closest airport, is about 60 kilometres to the east from the middle of Wakikata. Plan a route, pack up your bag and set your alarm clock — and make sure you don't hit the snooze button too many times!

Hotels in Wakikata

The bad news — there aren't any accommodations in Wakikata itself. The good news — you'll only need to go 9 kilometres away to Kimobetsu-cho to find some! Take your pick of the Rusutsu Resort Hotel & Convention and The Westin Rusutsu Resort and you'll be sure to get that decent night's sleep you're looking for.
