Holidays in Santiago

Even more than a bowl of chicken soup or a phone convo with your mum, travel fixes everything. So ditch all your worries and take that holiday to Santiago! (But you should still call your mum.)

Prepare to meet some new BFFs! Around 4,800,000 people reside in this part of Santiago.

Not sure where to start exploring in this iconic destination? Palacio de la Moneda and San Cristobal Hill are top choices.

A trip to Fantasilandia or Antilen Pool is a great chance for a bit of family bonding. If that isn't enough to tire the young ones out, why not visit Wave House or Balneario Municipal de Arrayan as well?

Are you kids curious about the world of wildlife? Take them on a trip to the Chilean National Zoo, where youngsters can discover what an animal likes to eat, the sounds it makes and a whole lot more!

Can you distinguish your pino grigio from your sauvignon blanc? Whether you're a serious wine enthusiast or a novice who simply enjoys a fine drop, you can learn something new at the Concha Y Toro Winery and the Vina Cousino Macul. For a greater insight into the winemaking craft, continue to the Vina Santa Carolina and the Aquitania Winery.

From a friendly ball game to simply relaxing on the grass, there are loads of reasons to head to a green spot like Forest Park or Sculpture Park. Also think about spending a leisurely day wandering the grounds of Parque Quinta Normal and O'Higgins Park.

Among the amazing natural sights in Santiago is Las Animas Waterfall. Its shimmering cascades of water won't disappoint.

Keep an eye out for fascinating native birds as you sit reflectively by the water's edge at Lake Esmeralda.

Put on some comfy shoes and prepare to go on an adventure. There are lots of nature reserves in the surrounding area that are just waiting to be explored. The fresh air and natural surroundings at Santa Lucia Hill and El Morado Natural Monument are as energising as they come. For those who haven't quite had their fill, Santuario de la Naturaleza del Arrayan and Cerro San Cristóbal are two more worth checking out.

The Museo Ferroviario and the Mirador Interactive Museum are tranquil places to escape a stormy day. Peruse the absorbing exhibits and ask the helpful staff about guided tours and other one-off events! The Museum of Memory and Human Rights and the Museo de la Solidaridad Salvador Allende are also leading options for museum nerds.

Increase your knowledge on the most recent in scientific innovation at Cerro Pochoco Observatory. The journey of discovery doesn't have to stop there. The Museo de Ciencia y Tecnología is filled with even more science artefacts and displays for you to examine.

We're not quite sure how the National Museum of Natural History and the National History Museum have managed to gather so many of earth's fascinating artefacts into just two buildings. A visit to either will mesmerise you for hours on end. When it comes to the natural world you'll never see everything, but there's certainly no harm in trying! For even more exotic specimens, add the Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino to your itinerary.

With such a wide range of superb art exhibitions to select from, you might need a little push in the right direction. We suggest grabbing a coffee and spending a few hours at the Museum of Contemporary Art or the National Museum of Fine Arts. The Ralli Museum and the San Francisco Colonial Museum also host collections which shouldn't be missed.

Can't get enough of history? Don't just read about the past in textbooks, see it with your own eyes at the Santiago Museum. The Museo Historico Militar and the Museo Histórico Nacional are also passionate about telling the story of the area's rich and unique heritage.

Get a better feel for the past when you immerse yourself in a few of Santiago's historic sites. Though you're spoilt for choices, the University of Chile and La Chascona are wonderful places to begin. If that's not enough to satisfy the history geek in you, also check out the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile and General Cemetery.

If you find it hard keeping up with the Joneses, consider for a second the neighbours of Cousino Palace. The impressive façade and luxurious interior of this famed residence would be near impossible to beat!

Whether you're a believer or not, places of worship like San Francisco Church and Metropolitan Cathedral are sure to be among the most peaceful and uplifting sights you'll experience in your travels. Many spiritually curious travellers also flock to the Templo de San Agustin and Basilica de la Merced.

They mightn't be on the front page of your guidebook, but the Pueblito Los Dominicos and the Los Dominicos Handicraft Village are still worth a look. You shouldn't forget to swing by the Gabriela Mistral Cultural Center and Barrio París-Londres either.
