Very basic service from hotel staff - ie they give you the room key and that’s it. The room is also basic. While it had clealry been cleaned there were still ants all over the bed. And very noisy - you can hear your neighbours and all movement. Overall ok for a 24 hour stopover to see the few local sights - which are all easy walking distance.
One night stay before heading to the Kinabatangan River. Easy walk to the Orangutan + Sunbear rehab centres (both amazing). Was a long walk to my room with many uneven steps along the boardwalk without any offer of help with my bags. I felt reception was quite poor - check in at 3pm and i arrived around 10.40 - was told I could put my bags down the end until check in but no further advice, but if I had rushed could have made the morning session with orangutans (I arrived just after 11 and was too late for the office). There was a night walk on offer but was not told anything about it. At dinner I was told to move from the table I'd chosen overlooking the lake, to any others all looking over the carpark, with no further explanation (apparently for a tour group). Room was quite good - good size, small balcony. Pool ok. Gym equipment was very old / looked unsafe.

Disliked: Property conditions & facilities
Setting was lovely and very convenient for OrangUtanRehabilitation and So nbear conservation. Accommodation was mediocre as was food. Bathroom very basic and toilet and sink both leaked constantly.
The place is run down. Other visitors have been generous with their descriptions. Rooms need to be refurbished. Water pressure needs to be improved. The electric shower was a trickle and the temperature control was ineffective. Bedding was threadbare. Pillows were rock hard. Curtains were stained. Electric sockets and light switches were ingrained with dirt. Buffet breakfast was poor. Noodles, eggs, beans, potatoes, toast and fruit. Sounds ok but really not. Restaurant food selection was large but nothing healthy. Restaurant staff were mainly glum and certainly not welcoming. Reception staff were better. Wild dogs were roaming everywhere. Yes it is the jungle but it seems like no money is being spent here on improvements or maintenance. Stay at the Sepilok Nature Resort instead. It is still just a 5 minute walk to the orang utan and bear centres. It might cost a bit more it will be worth it. We had a meal there and it was vastly superior to the Jungle Retreat. Hope this helps some people avoid the terrible experience that we had.
A great stay for visiting the other areas of Sepilok. You get what you pay for. Good food in the restaurant there and the breakfast was better than expected. Excellent grounds for birding first thing in the morning. The closest accommodation to the Orangutan Rehabilitation Center (5 minute walk) but quite far from the Rainforest Discovery Center. We tried to walk to the RDC but got picked up by a black cab on the road side and paid 5 Ringits for the ride.
Rooms are basic but the location to orangutan rehab center, etc and wilderness surrounds is all worth it. Unique jungle experience.
Staff and owners were so very helpful and considerate. Excellent cook here! We had a medical episode and the owners and staff couldn’t do enough to assist us! Thank you to Jessica and her staff.
We enjoyed our stay here. Its a perfect location for exploring the sanctuaries and the food is average. There isnt loads around so its definitely fine for the few days you may be here. The grounds are beautiful and rooms were clean and spacious. The place just looks a bit run down but is fine for the price you pay.
Beautiful surroundings. With fish, turtles and small alligators. Many dogs who want to join you at meal times :)
Fish food available if you want to lure them closer. Room was clean and bed comfortable. We had a balcony. Restaurant was good with a fairly large menu. Closed for last orders around 8pm.
We did the river trips and stayed for 2 nights
The whole experience was amazing. We booked with River Junkie
The hotel is laid back and relaxed. The layout is attractive, colonial rooms, well spaced out with balconies overlooking the river, comfortable beds with good linen. Great bathroom, large bedroom tastefully decorated
Good food, met many lovely guests.
Our guide, Azrol was informative and knowledgeable, saw most of the big five, just not Orangutans😢
I would really recommend this place

Loved the jungle setting and thd boardwalks between buildings taking you across the various lakes on the complex. Rooms themselves though a little "tired". Resort had more of a backpacker feel to it than a resort, but location great and easy walking distance to the Orang Utan centre and Sun Bear centre. A little frustrating that the restaurant area closes so early (9pm with last orders at 8.30pm) as this meant we were a bit stuck when comjng back from the nightwalk at the Rainforest Discovery Centre.

The grounds are amazing but the overall proterty really needs some TLC. Room look old, beds hard, swimming pool is a bit dirty and water not very clear.
The service is ok and staff friendly.
Nothing much around here. Conveniently near the Orangutan and Sunbear sanctuaries.
The staff at the front desk were sometimes helpful. The restaurant staff were less so.
The WIFI for the rooms is terrible.
The staff were very helpful and obliging. The owner however has a few too many rules, and I felt like I was in a military boarding school at times. Overall however, my stay was very good.
