History

Originally inhabited by indigenous tribes, the Northern Beaches area was already a popular seaside retreat by the late 1800s. As people flocked to this beautiful region, so did the developments and infrastructure, creating what you see today.

Things to do

As well as lazy days of sun-worshiping and swimming in the ocean, there are also heaps of great places to get your surf on. Each beach has its own vibe and you can spend days trying out the different ones. There are forests and national parks close to hand where you can enjoy long walking trails and nature spotting. Pack a picnic to make a day of it. Admire the views from the Palm Beach Light House, feel the spirituality at the Baha’i Temple, visit Aboriginal rock art sites, try Para sailing or hang gliding at Manly, or perhaps head to many Underwater World and get up close and personal to a few of the watery locals – but watch out they might be a bit slippery! In general, the Northern beach is a place to chill out with friendly locals.

Getting here and around

A cheap flight to Sydney is the easiest way to get to the Northern Beaches and you can stay in some great Northern Beaches accommodation once there. Getting around is easy - buses and ferries connect different parts and you could also hire your own car for full flexibility.
