Holidays in Kensington

Bring your adventurous side along with that well-worn suitcase. It's time to see what Kensington has to offer! A neighbourhood in Melbourne, it's a great place to experience another side of the Victoria capital. If you love meeting the locals while on the road, Melbourne is packed with potential new BFFs. Around 4,200,000 people call this city home. To reach Kensington from Tullamarine Airport, jump into a taxi and head southeast for 15 kilometres. From the centre of Melbourne, it's 4 kilometres to the northwest.

This city isn't short on exciting things to do, and many of them are found near Kensington. It's not easy to pick the top sights, but the Crown Casino and Entertainment Complex and Federation Square are a couple you should not miss. After taking a look at those, you're going to want to continue onwards to St. Kilda Beach and Luna Park. While you're in town, consider going to a few other neighbourhoods to experience more of what Melbourne offers. Flemington and West Melbourne are great suggestions that are within close reach.

You'll never be short of things to do in central Melbourne. The University of Melbourne and the RMIT University will keep you entertained for hours. The Melbourne Zoo and Melbourne Aquarium are also a few of the area's greatest draw cards.

Want a break from the kids? Organise a babysitter and go to the Carlton and United Breweries, the Australian Centre for the Moving Image and Young & Jackson's.

The Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, the Primrose Potter Australian Ballet Centre, the Alcaston Gallery and the Gertrude Contemporary Art Space are perfect for those wanting to learn a bit about the area's culture.

Unwind while you potter through the fascinating art collections at the National Gallery of Victoria, the Ian Potter Museum of Art and the Johnston Collection. Later, why not hit up a local café and contemplate your time there?

Keep an eye out for any special events that might be scheduled before heading over to have a look at the displays and exhibits at the Melbourne Museum, the Immigration Museum, the National Sports Museum and the Scienceworks and Melbourne Planetarium.

What better way to end a day's activities than with a few drinks and a good performance? Check the programme guides at the Forum Theatre, the Regent Theatre, the Sun Theatre and the Princess Theatre.

Melbourne City Baths, the Melbourne Star Observation Wheel, Westgate Park and TunzaFun Harbour Town Docklands are some brilliant places to take the children for an action-packed day of excitement.

Take a break from your phone, disengage from the worries of the modern world and enjoy the calm of the outdoors at Eureka Skydeck 88, Merri Creek Trail, the CERES Community Environment Park and Fitzroy Aboriginal Heritage Walking Trail.

South Melbourne Beach and Middle Park Beach are gorgeous places to visit on a cloudless day. Put your sunglasses on and see what fish you can spot in the swell.

Prepare a picnic spread and invite a few friends down for a chat in one of the lively green spaces nearby. Choose from Royal Park, Carlton Gardens, Fitzroy Gardens and Flagstaff Gardens.

Quite often, the best way to get to know the locals is by heading to the shops. Be sure to call in to Queen Victoria Market, Melbourne Central, Bourke Street Mall and South Melbourne Market.

Old Melbourne Gaol, the Royal Exhibition Building, the Victoria University of Technology and Melbourne Town Hall are bound to impress any visiting history buffs. Do a little research before head over so you can fully appreciate these striking places.

Find out about the region's spiritual dimensions at St Patrick's Cathedral, St Paul's Cathedral, Shrine of Remembrance and Abbotsford Convent. These sites are worth checking out whether you're a religious person or not.

Don't pass up the chance to visit the hallowed grounds of Etihad Stadium. Attend a live game of Australian rules football (AFL) in your navy blue and white and witness home team the Carlton Football Club try to claim glory. Alternatively, you can come down and support the Essendon Football Club or the North Melbourne Football Club, two other teams who also call this venue home.

"I don't always have the best luck with hotels in the city. Of course at the high price end, you can get it all. But at the mid-range, there is often compromise, be it a lack of modern fittings, or comfort, or amenities, or breakfast, or on-site parking. Usually one or more is lacking. Not with this ..."
