Holidays in Higashiyama

Like good coffee and selfies, there’s no such thing as too much travel. So why not make Higashiyama, Kyoto, your next great adventure? This vibrant city is home to around 1,500,000 people, along with tons of adventures to cross off your bucket list. To reach Higashiyama from Itami Airport, jump in a taxi and head northeast for 40 kilometres. You'll find this neighbourhood 2 kilometres southeast of central Kyoto.

This city isn't short on things to do, and you'll discover many of them near Higashiyama. It's difficult to choose the best sights, but Nijo Castle and the Kiyomizu Temple are two you won't want to miss. After taking a look at those, you'll want to continue on to Kyoto Imperial Palace and Fushimi Inari Shrine. While you're here, consider checking out a few other neighbourhoods to see more of what Kyoto offers. Sannenzaka Ninenzaka and Ishibe Alley are some great areas that are a short distance away.

Getting cabin fever in Higashiyama? Get out and explore Kyoto Tower and Katsura Imperial Villa, two highlights in the centre of the city. You'd be mad to leave the area without stopping at Heian Shrine and the Ryoanji Temple as well.

Broaden your knowledge of the area at the Kyoto Art Center, Shogunzuka Mound and the Kamishichiken Kabukai. These cultural sites can't be missed!

Regional galleries like the Kyoto National Museum, the Kyoto National Museum of Modern Art, the Hosomi Art Museum and the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art provide a glimpse into the creative side of the area. Why not find out if there are any upcoming openings and observe some of the incredible works?

From hands‐on exhibits to impressive objects and artefacts, museums have something to keep everyone occupied. If the weather turns bad, why not take yourself over to the Kyoto International Manga Museum, the Costume Museum, the Kaleidoscope Museum of Kyoto and the Kyoto Railway Museum?

The mark of a great show tends to be the amount of applause at the end. Watch the audience rise to their feet at the Gion Corner, Kyoto Concert Hall, Kyoto Kaikan Concert Hall and the Kyoto MINAMIZA Theatre.

Kids can have fun in the most unlikely locations. Delight them with trips to Kyoto Aquarium and the Tin Toy and Doll Museum.

On a bright and sunny day, breathe in the fresh air and experience the splendour of nature at the Shoseien Garden, the Zuihoin Garden, the Nanzenin Garden and the Manshu-in Garden.

If the chaos of city life is wearing you out, recharge in one of the nearby parks. Maruyama Park, Philosopher's Walk, Umekoji Park and Kamogawa Park are great spots to take some time out.

Quite often, the easiest way to get to know the locals is by checking out the shops. Remember to call in to Nishijin Textile Center, Aeon Mall Kyoto, Yumeyakata and Machikado Minaport.

Travel back through the mists of time at the Kyoto University, the Doshisha University, Fushimi Castle and the Kyoto Museum of Traditional Crafts. These historic attractions have a collection of educational stories to tell.

Sacred sites such as the Toji Temple, the Sanjusangendo Temple, the Daitokuji Temple and the Higashi Honganji Temple can provide you with a deeper understanding of the region. Immerse yourself in the calm atmosphere and take a moment to contemplate.

Slip into some purple and white and join the throng of passionate soccer supporters with an undying love for the Kyoto Sanga FC. All of the fun and excitement goes down at Nishikyogoku Athletic Stadium, just a short commute from Higashiyama.

Awesome value in Kyoto
"Great value. Modern boutique hotel room. King bed was really two queen beds pushed together with a Godzilla top mattress. I had to take a taxi to get from my side of the bed to my husband’s.
