Holidays in Baixa

FOMO, wanderlust, fernweh. Whatever you're suffering from, there's only one way to fix it — get going to Baixa. No matter what sort of adventures you're looking for, this Lisbon District neighbourhood has plenty going for it. One of the best parts of travelling is the people you meet on the way. And with 500,000 people calling the capital of Portugal home, there's plenty of opportunities to meet new BFFs. Once you've hit the tarmac at Humberto Delgado Airport and plucked your bags from the carousel, Baixa will be a commute of 7 kilometres to the south. From central Lisbon District, it's 0.2 kilometres to the southeast.

This city is brimming with impressive things to do, and many of them are found near Baixa. It's not easy to pick the best attractions, but Castle of Sao Jorge and Lisbon Cathedral are two you shouldn't miss out on. Don't forget to put Jeronimos Monastery and Cristo Rei on your schedule too. For a better perspective of this lively city as a whole, visit the close-by neighbourhoods of Santa Maria Maior and Lisbon.

The centre of the city also features a range of excellent sights to lay your eyes upon, such as the Gulbenkian Museum and Lisbon Oceanarium. To get an even better feel for your surrounds, also drop into 25th of April Bridge and Santa Justa Elevator.

The Lisbon Casino, Skydive Europe and the Quinta de Pancas are great excuses to let your hair down and relax.

The Culturgest, the Dom Fernando II e Gloria Ship, the Galeria 111 and the Instituto de Artes dos Espectaculos are perfect for those wanting to learn more about the local culture.

Sometimes a work of art can impress you so much that you have to find out more about it. See if the staff can give you some information about the pieces at the Berardo Collection, the Chiado Museum, the National Museum of Ancient Art and the Center for Modern Art.

From interactive activities to awe-inspiring objects and artefacts, museums have something to keep all ages interested. If you get stuck with some miserable weather, why not head on over to the National Museum of Natural History, the Museum of Design, the Knowledge Pavilion and the National Coach Museum?

What nicer way to top off a day's sightseeing than with dinner, drinks and a live performance? Check the programme listings at the National Theatre of D. Maria II, National Theater of Sao Carlos, Lisbon Coliseum and the Maria Matos Municipal Theater.

Children can be excellent travel companions, especially if you go to the right places! For an entertaining family day out, head to the Ascensor da Gloria, the National Library, the Bica Lift and the Glória Lift.

If you're on holiday with your children, they're sure to love a trip to one of the local fun-filled attractions. Floresta de Monsanto Park and Clube de Golfe do Pateo Bagatella are the ideal places for them to expend their energy.

Take a break from your phone, disconnect from the worries of modern life and delight in the beauty of nature at Miradouro de Santa Luzia, Miradouro de Sao Pedro de Alcantara, Elevador Panoramico da Boca do Vento and Graca Viewpoint.

Discover the beauty of the Botanical Garden, the Ajuda Botanical Garden, the Estufa Fria and the Estufas. If you're fortunate, you might even be able to spot some of the local critters!

If the chaos of city life is wearing you thin, recharge in one of the nearby parks. Edward VII Park, Belvedere Sao Pedro de Alcantara, Praca do Imperio Garden and Tapada das Necessidades Park are great spots to kick off your shoes and relax.

There's nothing better than treating yourself to a bit of shopping. Grab your wallet and make a stop at Pasteis de Belem, Amoreiras Shopping Center, Colombo Shopping Centre and Forum Almada.

Rossio Square, Parliament, the Maritime Museum and Commerce Square can give you a glimpse back into the area's past.

Sacred places such as National Pantheon, Monastery of Sao Vicente de Fora, Estrela Basilica and Old Church of Our Lady of the Conception can give you a greater understanding of the region's faith. Relax in the calm atmosphere and take a moment to ponder.

Wild about soccer? Then don't forget to take some red and white with you to heartily cheer on the S.L. Benfica at SL Benfica Stadium.
