History

Originally the home of indigenous Aboriginal people, Warrnambool is named after a close by volcanic cone. Local stories say that Europeans first visited the area in the 1600s, although there is no solid proof of this. Europeans were definitely in the area though from the early 1800s. Whaling was a popular activity in Warrnambool, and it saw great expansion and development during the Victorian Gold Rush.

Visit Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village and take a fascinating journey back in time to the days when many ships were lost in the unforgiving waters.

Things to do

If you want to relax and chill out there are pretty beaches close to hand. If you’re feeling more active there are also some great surfing spots and diving activities. Culture vultures can muse in the local museums to learn about the history of the region and admire beautiful works in the art galleries.

For nature lovers, head to one of the fab lookout points for incredible views – you may even see whales, dolphins, seals, and penguins swimming in the open sea. Don’t miss the exciting sound and laser show. To get even closer to nature head to the beautiful Tower Hill State Game Reserve. Located inside an extinct volcano you can see kangaroos, koalas, emus, and more. If you’re craving some peace and quiet the botanic gardens are just perfect!
