The neighbourhood of Tokiiri is just 3 kilometres from the city's heart. However, if you're going to stay here, you better make haste! The only option available is the Hotel Route-Inn Ueda.
There aren't many places more tranquil than the elaborate interior of a temple. Allow yourself some time to relax at Kokubun-ji Temple. After staring slack-jawed at nature's artworks, hit up famous tourist sights like ruins, castles and traditional villages. If the weather is putting on a show (or even if it's not), you could also have a go at some popular local activities like snowboarding, skiing and cross-country skiing.
Everyone knows Aussies just love to have a good time, so consider kicking back a little longer and going to the Shiriyaki Onsen and Akaiwa Community Center in Kusatsu, 40 kilometres to the northeast of Ueda. If you'd like to spend a few nights in Kusatsu, consider the Kusatsu Now Resort Hotel and Kusatsu Onsen Hotel Village. Or, you could consider staying in Omachi, 45 kilometres to the west of Ueda, where you can choose from the Kurobe Kanko Hotel and Hotel Karamatsuso. Mount Takagari and the Omachi Alpine Museum are among the more popular places to check out while in Omachi.
