With its thick walls and prominent turrets, Matsukura Castle is an astounding fortification. Gaze upon its façade or simply close your eyelids and imagine what it was like in its prime.

Whatever your beliefs, Sakurayama-Jinja and the Shorenji Temple are great places to check in with your spiritual side. If you're happy to discover even more, head on to the Hida Kokubun-ji and the Sukyo Mahikari.

You'll probably think you've ticked everything off your list after seeing Takayama's most impressive tourist attractions, but don't fly home just yet. There are still some surprises left.
