Ban Tak is a destination that has heaps of cool stories to tell. If you think your life's been a bit vanilla lately, a trip here is the perfect answer!
The leading city of Chiang Mai Province is within reach of Ban Tak. You'll find this bustling centre 200 kilometres to the north.
Searching for some time out in nature? Jump in the car and check out Mae Ka Sa Hot Springs, 45 kilometres from Ban Tak. You can also feel the warm glow of the sun on your skin at Bhumipol Dam, 25 kilometres away.
Go 19 kilometres to the southeast and you'll find Tak. It's the home of some excellent sights, including the Wat Bot Mani Si Bunrueang and City Pillar Shrine of the Four Great Kings.
'There is no love sincerer than the love of food,' George Bernard Shaw once said, but add travel to the mix and it's a match made in heaven. You're invited to indulge in your two loves by eating and drinking your way across Tak.
Once you grab a seat and flick through a restaurant or café menu, you'll soon realise that vietnamese coriander and culantro are some ingredients commonly used in the local cuisine.
Of course, you can't leave Ban Tak without sampling khao kan chin (steamed pork blood and rice) or khanom chin nam ngiao (rice with pork blood sauce). Popular with locals and considered specialty dishes, they are an essential experience for anyone with an interest in food.
Make an effort to connect with your hosts by memorising a couple of expressions in the local tongue. Try to pronounce 'Kŏr hâi dern taang doi sà-wàt-dì-pâap'. It translates as 'have a nice trip'. One more to add to the memory bank is 'Raa-dtree sà-wàt', meaning 'good night'.
What better way to learn about a place than by involving yourself in a day of national celebration? There'll be many festivities planned for Birthday of King Phumiphon on the 5th of December.
It's always hard to say "Laa gòn ná" to Ban Tak, but don't worry, it will still be there next time!
Metal detectors, long lines and even longer waiting times. Airports can be exhausting. Give yourself extra time to head to Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX). Situated 190 kilometres to the north, this is the closest terminal.
