    Pocket Guide: Rockhampton

Slap on your wide-brimmed hat and leave the big city behind as you roll into Rockhampton, the gateway to Queensland’s outback. With about 300 days of sunshine a year, Rockhampton is a seriously hot destination. It’s also the beef capital of Australia, and with two million cattle in the surrounding area, foodies will have mouth-watering steak right on their doorstep. Ladies who love the rugged cowboy look will find plenty of eye candy in Rockhampton – maybe the farmer wants a wife! But it’s not all V8s and dust. There are stacks of photo opps and gorgeous natural getaways as well. Saddle up and ride into town with our rockin’ Rockhampton hotels!

Parts of Rockhampton are as rural as it gets – roads lined with farms dotted with sparse trees and mountains on the horizon. But that’s not all there is to see and do in Rocky! In the city centre, old-fashioned colonial buildings share space with modern ones, and you can do some serious shopping at East Street Mall, which has a ‘Tar-jay’ (Country Target) and plenty of fashion outlets. Of course, you may want to ditch the purse for some real adventure, and Rocky has plenty of that! Get close (but not too close) to the crocs at Koorana Crocodile Farm and watch baby crocs hatch! Not into crocs? Maybe bats are more your style? Mount Etna Caves National Park is about 26km north of Rockhampton, featuring one cave where 80% of Australia’s female bent-wing bats raise their young. Take a guided tour to see over 100,000 bats emerge from the cave at night.

The dining in Rocky is diversely delish, from Italian, Thai and seafood to dinky-di Aussie tucker like roo and, of course, steak. Lots of steak. For a little history, visit Rockhampton Heritage Village, a faithfully recreated township that shows off Rockhampton’s history from 1850 to 1950. Snap a pic of a blacksmith’s shop, quaint old cottages and some shiny vintage vehicles that would look totally boss if you drove one down the street today!

When you feel like cooling off, Great Keppel Island is only a 20 minute flight from Rockhampton Airport! A whopping 17 white beaches, sublime coral reefs and a satisfying selection of bars and restaurants are waiting for you on this relaxed tropical getaway. From beef and bats to restaurants and relaxation, you can live every lastminute in North Queensland with our Rockhampton hotels! Yee-hawww!
