Grapes have been grown in the Napa Valley since the early 1800s, and commercial ventures had already started by the by the 1850s. Different wineries started to spring up and some won prestigious awards for their tasty products. By the turn of the 20th century there were over 140 wineries in the area, and some of the early wineries are still in operation today! During the Prohibition era many wineries were forced to close, although some stayed in business by producing wine for religious ceremonies. Despite several setbacks the Napa Valley got right back on its feet to become the leading wine area that it is today.

Today, there are over 450 wineries in the Napa Valley, growing a variety of different grapes – a tour of the different wineries is highly recommended, and you can sample some of the different tasty wines made locally, as well as seeing how they are made and visiting the pretty vineyards. If you’re feeling active, get ready to explore some scenic walking and biking trails. Some favourite outdoor spots include Lake Hennessey, Sonoma Creek, and the Robert Louis Stevenson State Park. Golf is another popular activity. Check out Castello di Amorosa for a taste of the local history and to admire some stunning architecture. There are delightful art galleries all around the area, many showcasing works that have been inspired by the surrounding gorgeous landscapes.
