Holidays in Millstreet

When chucking a sickie becomes way too simple, it's time to break free from the daily grind and say hello to Millstreet!

It's located 240 kilometres southwest of Dublin, the capital of Ireland.

Why don't you spend some time in Blarney? Situated 35 kilometres east, from here you can experience iconic attractions such as Blarney Stone and Blarney Castle.

Spend at least a couple of hours strolling along the shoreline at Banna Beach or Warren Beach.

Escape on an adventure to some nearby natural beauty spots. 40 kilometres out of Millstreet, Gap of Dunloe is all yours to explore. Purple Mountain, 40 kilometres away, is another excellent spot to unwind in the outdoors.

What could be more exciting than cheering until your voice is hoarse at a rugby union match? Watch the Sundays Well RFC battle for glory at Musgrave Park, located in Cork, 45 kilometres away. Or, experience the electrifying atmosphere of a live home game featuring the Dolphin RFC.

Searching for more things to see and do? Head to Ballyvourney, 15 kilometres southwest of Millstreet, for Prince August Toy Soldier Factory and the St. Gobnait's Monastic Site. Alternatively, Macroom is 18 kilometres to the south, and it's here you'll come across the Macroom Castle and Warrenscourt Wood.

Mallow sits 30 kilometres away from Millstreet and is an important part of the region. Nearby attractions include the Mallow Golf Course, the Clock House and Mallow Castle. Still got some time to kill? Mallow The Rebel Trail and Spa House are also within reach.

Bank cards? Check. Wallet? Check. But have you brought your appetite? With some fabulous food and drink to gulp down around these parts, it's the one thing you shouldn't leave home without.

Want some insight into the local food? We recommend getting a taste for mutton and pork, two traditional ingredients which make up some of the dishes here.

When in Millstreet, you should eat like the locals do. That means sampling a plate of Irish stew (lamb or mutton with potato, onion and parsley) or drisheen (blood sausage), a couple of the region's specialties.

A meal isn't complete without dessert, so don't worry about counting calories and lay into one of the most lip-smacking sweet treats, sweet seedcake loaf.

For lovers of a satisfying pint, head to the nearest bar and say Murphy’s Irish Stout. It's best enjoyed with a side of storytelling and mingling with the regulars.

Don't forget to put the 17th of March in your calendar. In Millstreet this means one thing — Saint Patrick's Day. A prominent day of celebrations, this is a terrific time to head to the country.

It's always a pity when you have to head home. However, your time in the fantastic Cork region will have made you richer, no matter how much of your holiday allowance is left in your pocket.

Time to hit the tarmac? Pack your suitcase, set the alarm clock and make a plan to get to Cork Airport (ORK). It's around 45 kilometres to the southeast.
