Holiday In Marikina

Metro Manila makes up the National Capital Region of the Philippines and contains over 10 municipalities. One of those is the city of Marikina, also known as the “Shoe Capital of the Philippines”, but we’ll get to that later.

Once a rural settlement and now one of the most important commercial centres in the area, this place has grown to say the least. Browse lastminute.com.au’s great offers on cheap holidays to Marikina and you’ll be amazed at the money you save.

Things to Do in Marikina

lastminute.com.au’s deals for car hire options in Marikina are great, so get yourself one. After that’s done, head to the Marikina Shoe Museum. We’re not kidding, there really is a museum dedicated to the city’s shoe industry. The real gem of the place, though, is the footwear collection of Imelda Marcos, the former first lady of the Philippines. Shoe-aholic celebrities can’t hold a candle to her—she had over 1,500 pairs of shoes, for crying out loud! Her closet would’ve made a great MTV Cribs episode.

After you’ve come down from your shoe high—it may take a while—mosey down J.P. Rizal Street for a self-guided “archi-tour”. As a matter of fact, the shoe museum is located on this street, so you’ll just have to go right or left out of it. Some of the city’s oldest buildings are here, like the Santuario y Parroquia del Nuestra Senora de los Desamparados and the San Roque Church.

Shopping, Dining & Nightlife

You can’t go on holiday in Marikina without spending some money on yourself. See what you can buy at the Marikina Market Mall, Metro Manila’s largest shopping centre. Get your hands on souvenir shirts, a string of pearls and an abaniko (handheld fan). You can also shop until you drop at SM City Marikina mall, Blue Wave Mall at Marquinton and inside the Riverbanks Centre.

Now that you’ve loaded up on souvenirs, it’s time to load up on grub. Satisfy your appetite with a leg of chicken adobo and a side of pork tamarind soup. But those are pretty standard dishes, and you didn’t come all this way to eat normal stuff, did you? The local markets are the best places to get unique treats like balut. It’s a fertilised duck egg that’s boiled and eaten in the shell. Get one of these bad boys down and you’ll be able to eat anything.

What’s the nightlife like, you ask? In the Angel Tuazon Entertainment District it’s pretty darn good. See if you can keep up with the Filipinos as they cut a rug through the night until the break of dawn. Some of our packages to Marikina have hotels in the district so you won’t have to worry about a long walk home. We dare you to find a stretch of sidewalk that doesn’t have an establishment with loud music and cold beers pouring out of it.

"Decent hotel close to the airport and with good food options in the surrounding area. Only downside is that the shower water was not warm in the room I was in. It wasn’t ice cold but quite cool even when I turned it to hot."
