A Helsinki neighbourhood, it's a brilliant base for exploring this buzzing city's sights. One of the best parts of travelling is the people you meet along the way. And with 550,000 people calling the capital of Finland home, there's loads of opportunities to make a few new BFFs. After hitting the tarmac and collecting your suitcase at Vantaa Airport, your ride will travel 17 kilometres south to get to Katajanokka. From the heart of the city, it's a commute of 2 kilometres to the east.

A good deal of this city's leading attractions are scattered near Katajanokka, and Presidential Palace and the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art are two of the very best. The have-to-see sights of the Ateneum Art Museum and Senate Square are also waiting for you. For a new perspective on Helsinki, venture to Kruununhaka and Helsinki City Centre, close-by neighbourhoods just waiting to be discovered.

Not much stills the mind and boosts your creativity like visiting an art gallery. Take the opportunity to reflect as you examine the fascinating works showcased at the Design Museum, the Helsinki City Museum, the Sinebrychoff Art Museum and the Museum of Foreign Art.

Keep an eye out for any special events that might be on before heading on over to peruse the exhibits at the Military Museum of Finland, the Submarine Vesikko, the Museum of Finnish Architecture and the Mannerheim House Museum.

What better way to finish a day's activities than with dinner, drinks and a show? Check the programme guides at Helsinki Music Centre, the Swedish Theatre, Finnish National Opera and the National Theater.

Kids often have fun in the most unusual locations. Make some memories with them at the Helsinki City Library, the Maxim Finnkino Cinema, the Kinopalatsi Finnkino Cinema and the Kinopalatsi Movie Theater Complex.

Sometimes the best way to get the feel of a new place is by checking out the shops. Be sure to stop by Stockmann, Iittala Outlet Arabia, Kamppi Center and Kauppahalli.

Seurasaari Open Air Museum, Suomenlinna Fortress, the University of Helsinki and Parliament Building are bound to impress visitors with an interest in history. Do a little research before head over so you can fully appreciate these interesting places.
