Things to do
Summer is a great time to visit Hobart, as it’s when the city hosts some of the country’s top events like the week-long Taste of Tasmania festival, which celebrates local food, wine and beer. The annual Sydney to Hobart yacht race and the Hobart Summer Festival kick off in late December. There are also plenty of other great events held throughout the year.
Hobart is home to one of the most talked-about galleries in the world: MONA (the Museum of Old and New Art), which has an eclectic collection of weird and wonderful art. If a couple of hours of exploring the gallery has left you thirsty, you’re in luck, as one of Tassie’s most coveted vineyards, Morilla Estate, is next door. Settle into the wine bar, order some gourmet food and sample some vino.
If you’re still after some more of that great Aussie wine, there are several award-winning wineries nearby, such as Frogmore Creek and Puddleduck vineyards, so explore them both on a wine tour. Australia’s oldest brewery, Cascade is also worth booking a tour with if you enjoy a good brew. You’ll have some new found appreciation for how it is made. Combine this with gourmet produce, fresh seafood and delicious cheeses and you’ve got happy foodies with lots of fine dining options to choose from.
Put the famous Salamanca Markets on your must-do list. Held every Saturday, the markets are vibrant and feature a variety of arts and crafts, music, fresh produce and plenty to feast on for breakfast. If you enjoy boating, spend the rest of the day sailing some of Australia’s most beautiful coastlines and rivers.
No trip to Hobart is complete without enjoying the great outdoors, so pack a picnic and make tracks to Mount Wellington, which towers over the city providing an amazing view at the top. Or enjoy an adrenalin pumping mountain bike ride if that’s more your style.
Hobart is within easy reach of some of the best attractions Tasmania has to offer. If you’ve got time, pay a visit to Port Arthur for a dramatic piece of Australian history and cruise over to Bruny Island for your chance to spot penguins, seals, dolphins and whales.
