Holiday In Edinburgh

If you’re a fan of Harry Potter, whisky or unicorns, you’re basically a fan of Scotland. Unicorns are the national animal, and though we can’t prove it, there’s a popular rumour that Edinburgh has the most pubs per square kilometre in the world. You can test that theory with an Edinburgh holiday package.

Things to Do in Edinburgh

Did you know you can hike up a volcano on Edinburgh holidays? While Edinburgh probably won’t be confused for Fiji, it does have a dormant volcano right in Holyrood Park. At the top of Arthur’s Seat, you can explore a 2,000-year-old fort or just enjoy the view. If you’re lucky enough to visit on May 1, make the climb at sunrise, wash your face in the morning dew, and you’ll stay young forever! (Yes, you read that right. It’s a local legend—we can’t guarantee it.)

If you want to get a little bit weird with it, you’re in the right place on holidays to Edinburgh. Tour Mary Kings Close, an underground maze of hidden rooms where you can live like you’re in the 16th century (you’ll be glad you can return to modern times!). Not spooky enough? Surgeon’s Hall Museum will definitely bring the creep factor. Aside from the usual skeletons and brain slices, you can see a book allegedly made from the skin of murderer William Burke. Not for the faint of heart.

Shopping, Dining & Nightlife

On any Edinburgh holiday, you’ll want to pick up jewellery, sweaters and of course a bottle (or three) of Scotch whisky. The Royal Mile is a good start for souvenirs, but just 600 m west you’ll find colourful Victoria Street. These pastel storefronts are a cheerful place to indulge in a shopping pick-me-up. Pick up a cookbook and show your friends how to make fatty cutties—no, we’re not name-calling—or go full Scot with a tweed suit jacket (this country was hipster before the word even existed).

For a well-kept foodie secret, grab one of lastminute.com.au’s cool Edinburgh car hire options and head north to Leith, the city’s port. Along the Shore of Leith you’ll find historic architecture and cobbled streets that will make you feel like you’re in the 19th century—but Michelin-starred restaurants that are sure to bring your taste buds back to the present day. Plus, it’s the perfect post-dinner walk.

Old Town is the place to be if late nights, high heels and loud beats are your thing, while South Side has a laid-back student vibe thanks to the University of Edinburgh campus. No Scotland holiday is complete without a night of whisky, accordion and dancing (trust us). Head to the West End to catch a ceilidh chow down on haggis (sorry, it’s a rite of passage!) then do the Britannia Two-Step or Flying Scotsman—not to be confused with the whisky drink, though that may also be served.

What’s Next?

Don’t get up to high doh (get all worked up) if you’ve been busy with life and forgot to book your trip. Lastminute.com.au has Edinburgh holiday packages to suit any traveller—but you’re on your own for the kilt and bagpipes.
