Calgary may be the capital of Alberta, Canada, but being a big deal hasn’t gone to its head—ten-gallon hat and all.
Since the city struck liquid gold back in 1902, Calgary has grown from its ranch town roots into a modern metropolis. While you’re on holiday in Calgary, you’ll still see plenty rhinestone cowgirls and urban cowboys kicking up their heels. Get in on the fun with the city’s world-class performing arts scene, gorgeous riverside parks and rowdy rodeo days. And when you’re ready to chill out, putter around the Bow River, which is as easygoing as the Canucks. Sounds like a good time, eh? Book one of our Calgary packages on the fly and get to the airport!
Start your Calgary holiday at the beginning, or at least at the Heritage Park Historical Village, where you can learn all about the good ol’ days at Canada’s largest historical museum. Don’t expect quiet galleries and artefacts on exhibition. Instead, visit with costumed historians and take a walking down Gasoline Alley, an automobile museum that is not as flammable as it sounds. Next, get some fresh air with a hike around Fish Creek Provincial Park on the south end of town. Fish Creek is an enormous green space, but if you can’t get enough, hop into one of our Calgary car hire options and drive out to Banff National Park for some mountaineering just an hour west of the city centre. Just make sure you get back in time for a concert and chuck wagon races at Calgary Stampede. If you aren’t into playing the ponies, you can still get your country on at the Calgary Corn Maze & Fun Farm.
This part of the “Great White North” isn’t all the Wild West. In the downtown district, check out Stephen Avenue, where you can easily spend that fun money you’ll save by booking one of our cheap Calgary holidays. Stephen Avenue is the city’s walking mall, lined with local shops, restaurants and street artists. For even quirkier finds, head east to the neighbourhood of Inglewood—Calgary’s centre of cool—with record stores, vintage boutiques and more.
As the cattle capital of Canada (say that five times fast), Alberta is known for its AAA beef, so if you’re craving a steak burger, you’re in luck. Veggie lovers won’t go hungry, though, with heaps of market cafes and international eats all over the city. While you’re in Inglewood, get your snack on in the fun indie coffee houses and cafes.
Lookin’ for a little boot-scootin’? Well, mosey on over to the downtown area for some honkey tonk tunes and pub-hopping. If you prefer jazz and fancy cocktails at the end of the day, you’ll find that too. Just take yourself south of the Bow River, where the drinks and the fun flow freely.
Canada is calling, and it very politely requests that you book one of our cool Calgary holiday packages and get ready for adventure. At lastminute.com.au we have sweet deals on hotels and flights that fit your schedule, so start packing. Don’t forget your boots!
