Initially home to a Celtic tribe, Romans eventually captured the area, turning it into the capital of Roman Aquitaine. It came under many attacks, and went through a period of obscurity, rising once again in the 6th century. This cycle was repeated over several centuries, and by the 16th century it had become a major centre for wine, sugar, and slave imports. It became a part of France in the 1650s and the 18th century was Bordeaux’s true golden age.
