Kundasang is much more than just a cute little Malaysian
Borneo mountain village with spectacular scenery and fresh mountain air to clear your head. It’s the gateway to the gorgeous Mt Kinabalu National Park – and for those game enough to attempt to scale its mighty peak, Mt Kinabalu. About 86km inland from Kota Kinabalu, Kundasang oozes views, village life and potential for adventure. So get in on the action with our fab range of Kundasang hotels below!
Mt Kinabalu and surrounds
Mt Kinabalu National Park is practically on your doorstep when you stay in Kundasang. The entrance is just 6km up the road! One of the most significant natural environments on the planet, it was Malaysia’s first UNESCO World Heritage listed site. A wander along one of the park’s trails will wind you past gorgeous lush scenery, thousands of types of native flora and fauna and all kinds of wildlife. Of course, wherever you go it’s hard to escape the looming Mt Kinabalu, which thousands flock here to climb every year. One of the tallest mountains in South-East Asia, with a 4095m-high summit, the view is super amazing at the top. No doubt you’ll be bragging about it for months! But whether you climb it or not, you’ll still love the peaceful and green surrounds of this eco-jackpot.
Village sights
From Kundasang, the views are totally fab – you simply can’t escape Mt Kinabalu! But apart from admiring the green rolling lands and that jagged granite peak (all too often shrouded in mist), another must-do sight is the Kundasang War Memorial. Built in 1962 to commemorate the brave Australian and British POWs who died in Sandakan and on the Ranau Death Marches during WWII, it also pays tribute to the local population who risked their lives to help the POWs. You’ll love the four beautiful gardens: the Australian Garden, the English Garden, the Borneo Garden and the Contemplation Garden and Pool.
Just around the corner
Kundasang is only small, but there are other villages just around the corner. So take a quick trip to Ranau to check out the Sabah Tea Garden, the busy Saturday night market, and the brilliant Poring Hot Springs and Nature Reserve just outside of town (the perfect way to treat yourself after a day of hiking!). As well as the soothing and relaxing hot springs, you can also explore the gardens and the butterfly farm.
