Making new friends is one of the most rewarding parts of travelling, and with as many as 180,000 residents calling this place home, you're bound to have plenty of chances.

It lies 9 kilometres away from Kastela, and 250 kilometres away from Zagreb County, the national capital.

You probably know this by now, but Diocletian's Palace is not to be missed by visitors to Split. As far as world-class attractions go, it's one of the best.

After high-stakes card games and a lively atmosphere? Get along to the Platinum Casino! It's the ideal place to begin a big night out!

Take a journey along the seven seas at the Croatian Maritime Museum, a valuable repository of the region's seafaring past.

We aren't exactly sure how the Museum of Croatian Archaeological Monuments and the Archaeological Museum have managed to amass so many of earth's fascinating treasures into just two spaces. A visit to either will mesmerise you for hours on end. When it comes to the natural world you can never see it all, but that shouldn't stop you from trying! For even more exotic specimens, add the Natural History Museum to your agenda.

Art enthusiasts come from all corners of the globe to view Split's impressive collections, and the Mestrovic Gallery and the Gallery of Fine Arts are usually the first stops on their lists. More lively canvases and splendid sculptures can be found at the Froggyland and the Jaman Gallery.

Unlock some of the secrets of the city's past at the City Museum of Split. Through stories, images and artefacts, its exhibits showcase the important characters and events that have shaped the area over time.

Enjoy a glimpse into bygone times when you explore Salona Ruins and the Gregory of Nin Statue. If that doesn't satisfy your inner history geek, also check out the Split Riva and Saint Duje Bell Tower.

Explore the mighty stronghold of Klis Fortress. Learn about its defensive mechanisms and let your mind go wild visualising the historic military operations that took place in the very spot you're standing.

Marvellous structures that have played host to many important guests over the years, Papalic Palace and Nakic Palace boast some memorable architectural elements. Cindro Palace is also well worth a look.

Whether you're religious or not, places of worship like Cathedral of Saint Domnius and St. Stephen's Monastery are sure to be among the most peaceful and uplifting sights you'll experience during your travels. You should also find out if tours are available at the Temple of Jupiter and the Synagogue.

There is a saying that exploring new places leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller. You'll certainly have more tales to tell if you visit some of Split's less well-known attractions, such as Split Marina, Let Me Pass Street and Strozanac Marina.
