We stayed last year because of the location for 1 night and thought this year would be better, but unfortunately it was worse. The bath had rust all around the plug area and the mat to stand on for the shower in the bath was black with mould. The carpet in one corner of the room had a frayed patch and the carpets leading up the stairs to the room from reception are all frayed and worn. The staff are helpful but the hotel needs serious TLC. I don’t think we will stay again next year. Linda. North Wales.

Good location in historic town. Parking overnight just £5. Reception staff friendly. Historic but very tired creaky old building with no beverage service at all but at the price, bo complaints for one / two nights.

Reviewed yesterday The Lion Hotel in Shrewsbury is, at first glance, one of the most iconic and historic properties in the town. Positioned right in the heart of Shrewsbury, it undoubtedly boasts one of the most central and convenient locations for visitors. With an 8 out of 10 rating on Hotels.com and a striking Georgian façade, one might expect a stay here to feel charming and memorable. Unfortunately, my experience was anything but. I’m a seasoned traveller, familiar with the full range of accommodation options in Shrewsbury, from the quaint to the luxurious. And I can confidently say that the Lion Hotel is no longer worthy of the praise it seems to be coasting on. Despite the building’s historic character, it feels more like a neglected care home than a proud heritage hotel. There’s been no substantial renovation in decades. The carpets are threadbare, the furniture dated, and the air heavy with the mustiness of neglect. One of my first impressions—sadly accurate—was that the hotel is riddled with carpet moths. Throughout my two-night stay, I encountered them repeatedly in the stairwells and common areas. My room was clean in a basic sense, but incredibly sparse in amenities. There was no iron, no ironing board, and little to make the room feel comfortable or even up to standard. The bed was tired and lumpy, and the only “luxury” was a functional bathroom. Returning to the hotel after dinner one evening, I was met with a locked front entrance and told to access the hot

If you like antique style, this hotel is for you

Very old style. Not really my thing. I felt it was over-priced for what it was. No lift, but someone did help with my case. Ripped curtain in one of our rooms, remote held together with tape in the other room. I wouldn’t want to stay here again but if you like old style you might like it.

Chose because it looked alright, was central and did breakfast. Three days before the booking received an email to say no longer doing breakfast. Offered free cancellation but by then everywhere was booked as bank holiday. So decided to stay and there were places around and I found a good location which did breakfasts. The Lion is very tired with worn carpets, poor lighting and my single room which could have been from the 70s. There are traces of its former grandeur, a wooden but empty bar, a conference room with great decor but stored furnishings and an empty restaurant next door. The staff were professional but looked very glum - not surprising perhaps as their catering colleagues had been let go that week. The owner I understand lives abroad which might hint at the challenges this place faces. It was clean, the bed was comfortable and it was serviced between nights and properly. But it could be so much more in a town which is a great place to visit and has one imagines a need for accommodation!

The property is ideally located and parking is available. The hotel is a little old and dated, but has a lot of character and history. Ideally placed right in the centre of town. The Staff are the hotel's best asset helpful, friendly and professional with lots of local knowledge. The ensuite room was a good size had everything we needed again note the building is quite old so forgive the uneven floors or creaks for us that's part of the character of the hotel and we liked it. There's lots of local restaurants pubs beer gardens and cocktail bars around and it's a short stroll along the river bank nearby.

The Lion Hotel was one of the most prestigious hotels in the town when I was young and having been born and brought up in Shrewsbury I was looking forward to staying there this weekend. Sadly it did not live up to expectations. The smell when entering from the garage was that of an old disused, uncared for building which is what it is. The reception area was dark and dingy. As there was no lift I was kindly helped with my bags to my single room at the top of the hotel. The carpet was stained and although had been hoovered was ingrained with years of dirt. The mattress was so old and creaky it made a noise whenever I moved and was very uncomfortable. The bathroom was clean and there was lots of hot water so that was a plus. I felt sorry for the staff who were pleasant and helpful but had to explain to guests that they weren't serving breakfast any more and had no restaurant, having to reimburse some guests. The whole hotel needs complete refurbishment to bring it up to an acceptable level for an enjoyable stay.

The staff were very helpful, the hotel is old, but is clean with spacious rooms. The dripping shower was a bit annoying, but apart from that, we had no complaints. We would use this hotel again, it’s very central, and car park is good.

The Lion provided me with exactly what I required. I was meeting some friends I used to work with many years ago. I have never been to Shrewsbury before. The staff were helpful in telling me where to go to meet my friends. The hotel was very nice, great location and a car park! I will hopefully visit again but with my wife next time. Loved Shrewsbury.
