Loved property itself and location/rooms "floorplans", but for the price, expect a few more things to work smoothly. For example, the outside door was broken, and when "fixed", became even more unusable - this was not fixed entire trip. The coffee is not in the room but outside - never enough, always cold, and impossible to pump. The door has no handle on inside and doesn't stay closed unless you lock. The pillows and mattress are old and worn out - had better in a budget hotel in CR. The mosquito net doesn't stay on/close, so purely decorative. The shower switch doesn't work so you have very little water coming from the top. The electricity goes out frequently, and with no power back up, the fan switches off - given no AC, it is quite uncomfortable to sleep at night and gets very hot. Finally, and worst offense (among others), the internet in the room NEVER worked - had to go outside to work or work in the lobby of hotel. Oh, and the outside lights were not possible to switch on/off - only staff could do it. One night it was pitch dark, I texted and even told one of the employees about it, but nothing was done until I asked again the next day. There were positive things (and many), but the issues above and then some, make you upset as for the daily price charged, especially for the area, I expect far better.

The hotel was pretty good, my room was ‘cute’. I would stay there again but would also be happy to check out other options. I loved being right on the beach. However, the pool was small and literally right at the restaurant so it was hard to relax and enjoy the pool. The front desk staff were great but a couple of the wait staff could use a little improvement. The food was decent but really large portions. It is also an easy 10-15 minute bike ride into Puerto Viejo

Experiencia maravillosa, excelentisimo servicio, excelentes comidas y bebidas y muy buen precio para ser Costa Rica. Hermoso lugar, la playa maravillosa. Todo fabuloso, quizas el unico pero es que no tiene aire acondicionado y el ventilador de techo no es tan eficiente lo que hace que se tengan las ventanas abiertas y entran mosquitos. Fuera de eso SENSACIONAL, claro que volvería y lo recomendaría! Especialmente felicitacion a Angelo, Jessie, y Laurita que nos dieron un super servicio!!!!!

One with nature

My stay was absolutely wonderful, the staff made sure i was comfortable. This hotel is truly beautiful with sounds of the ocean, a big beautiful balcony, and views of the jungle. My favorite part was the lunch they packed for me when i checked out early before breakfast.

Properly well located, in front of Playa Negra Beach. Have wonderful gardens and friendly staff. Our room was nice, but had transparent ceiling were sun heated really fast, making hot to be. Had no air conditioning. Recommend make sure the room you choose will comply with your needs.

The staff were wonderful to is- Thanks to Leo, Laura, Oscar, Denise, Diana, and many more! Massage with Michelle was also great and so reasonable. The property has a guard that is there in the evening and helped us get on our way with fresh fruit and banana bread the kitchen prepared for us for our early departure at 5 am! Was close to Puerto Viejo’s busy area but nice to be away from the hustle of that. Enjoyed being able to retire to a quiet space with a restaurant that included breakfast and options for lunch and dinner too!

Jessica was the best, she took care of me. At first my first room was not good- the villa is not what it is like online. I needed to change and she helped me. A lot. She also helped me celebrate my birthday and the restaurant servers all sang happy birthday.

I’d love for this to be a solid five star review for a lovely, peaceful place on a gorgeous stretch of Caribbean beach… but it’s not quite that. This is NOT AN ADULTS-ONLY hotel. Despite that claim all over their website and and Expedia, during our four days there, there were lots of kids of all ages. We were looking forward to a quiet getaway and booked this place for a lot more than other places… and quickly realized that children *are* allowed in the restaurant, the pool, and the beach. Apparently, just no one under 16 (actually ~15) can stay in the rooms. OK, except these areas were central to the hotel – most of the rooms are built around the restaurant. We give serious thanks, though, as they did move us to a private bungalow area near the beach, which was great. It was nothing but the ROAR of the surf and amazing bird calls, all while we lay in hammocks and sipped cocktails! Overall, the place is so lovely! The food and drinks are fantastic, the rooms (even without a/c) are a little rustic but lovely. We saw so much wildlife – sloths, poison frogs, lizards, beach crabs, etc.– and the site is right next to this perfect stretch of dark sand beach with some *serious* surf. It was a slice of heaven, and we’d even consider going back, though there are other great places in the area. We especially want to thank the staff who were superb – especially Diana, who is THE BEST and set the stage for the best of this place. Our last few days at Banana Azul were simply EXCELLENT.

Beautiful Location, Opportunities for Improvement

The Howler Room is so nice with an ocean/beach view and large deck. Unfortunately, the beautiful experience was tempered by the non-working TV, non-working Fan and finding someone else’s dirty socks and underware beside the apartment refrigerator. Not what I expect at this price point!

Wow - what a fantastic experience we had!! This hotel is so gorgeous and lovely - each room is a joy. We had an upper floor room with an open air balcony overlooking the ocean, and a ground floor room with a massive bath tub! We ate many meals at the wonderful hotel restaurant. The black sand beach was amazing - the water clear warm and gentle. A great experience!!
