History

The city’s name means "Black Cockatoo" in an Aboriginal language. Several different Indigenous tribes called the area home throughout time, with Europeans arriving in the first part of the 1800s. Several historical buildings remain today.

Things to do

Sitting just shy of the Shoalhaven River, visitors can enjoy loads of water-based activities. Fishing enthusiasts will be pleased, and adventure junkies can enjoy kayaking, canoeing, diving, and rafting. A more leisurely way to enjoy the river is with a scenic pleasure cruise. Other activities in the area include hiking, biking, and 4WD adventures. When it comes to history, the old gothic house, Meerogal, is well worth a visit. You will see buildings from Victorian times around the city as well as the picturesque towns of Kangaroo Valley, Berry and Bundanoon. There are a couple of vineyards and wineries close to hand, perfect for a relaxing day tasting some delicious local wines. Enjoy great views from the Hanging Rock Lookout. There are beaches and national parks within easy reach like those at Gerringong, Gerroa and Narrawallee, whch are perfect for swimming, sunbaking or just chilling out.

Shopping and dining

The food in Nowra is a bit hit and miss, so your best bet is to head to the gourmet town of Berry, where you’ll find heaps of local restaurants like Postman’s Tavern, Nowra’s former post office, which serves up everything from duck to local seafood. If you want something more laidback, head down to Hyams Beach to chow down on some local fish and chips.

Getting here and around

Many of the main attractions are within easy walking distance, although there is a decent public transportation system if your feet have just had enough!
