Peaceful lake, quiet area, nice overall room. You can get there by bus, but it's coming once per hour and it doesn't run too late. The onsen had the sulphur smell (rotten egg), but it's the natural spring "flavor". Breakfast was specific japanese, though not really to our liking (no fault of the hotel)
Quiet and relaxing onsen inn, an economic choice as well. A short walk up from a bus stop, with a lovely view of the lake. Great for a relaxing get away.
Good:
-Nice location, right beside Lake Nikko
-Looks nice
-Friendly staff
Bad:
-no attached showers
-hotel is a bit old
-restaurant doesn't serve walk-in diners (you need to book with meals or make requests in advance)
Overall, nice little hotel in a really scenic area. It's lacking on the amenities side which makes it less value for money but overall from my drives around the area look like one of the better options. However I personally would not go back during a cold season as some parts of the walkways don't seem to be heated and it's really cold when you walk over to the common showers (no attached room showers).
We arrived later than planned but the staff was still very welcoming and informative upon our arrival. Our family enjoyed the onsen before heading to bed. We were here less than 12 hours, but the beds were comfortable and the room was super spacious. There was a refrigerator which was very nice for the snacks we had packed and there was a bottle of water for each us in the room. We had mountain side views which were nice. Keep your eyes open for deer and monkeys while driving up the 20 something switch backs. It is a lovely hotel and we would consider returning if our travel plans allow us more time to enjoy the hotel and the surrounding area.
So excellent for its price. The common areas were clean and spacious with lots of couches for hanging out. Yukatas (one size) we’re provided for adults. Lay out your own futon if you are in a futon bedding room. We had to leave out outside shoes in the shoe cupboard once we enter the hotel but we (2 adults and 2 kids) found it impossible to navigate the steps to our room in the hotel-provided slippers so we eventually gave up and went around in our socks. All guest rooms are on the second floor.
The natural onsen water for this hotel is sulphuric rich so obviously it comes with the smell. There is another bath with clear water though. I forgot what the exact water temperature was but I remember it to be very very hot.
We didn’t get the meal package so I can’t review the food. There is a vending machine with basic amenities, drinks, snacks and cup noodles at prices you would expect for a location with no other restaurants and combini around. About ¥400 for cup noodles.
Note that if you get the Nikko bus free pass to Lake Chuzenji area, the bus stop for this hotel is actually one stop away from the area covered, but it’s just a 5 minutes walk along the lake. Fall foliage from the hotel (on a hill) is beautiful during the season.
Our host (I believe he is the owner), speaks excellent English, for which I am grateful because we left some stuff behind when we departed and had to contact them by phone.
