Initially the site of an Aboriginal settlement, Europeans first arrived in the area in the 1880s. Early settlers made a living from agriculture. Several villages were merged to create what is now the town of Mission Beach. Although a thriving tourist area it has managed to retain the charms and atmosphere of a small coastal town.

Mission Beach offers a wonderfully relaxing vacation and you’ll be hard pushed to resist the lure of the glorious sandy beaches. Laze in the sun as you feast your eyes on fabulous views and take trips to the nearby islands. Dunk Island is a particular favourite, and others include Family Island and Hitchinbrook Island. Keen on fishing? The reef offers great opportunities to catch your own dinner! Head into the rainforest to spot the colourful and notorious cassowary bird as well as lots of other creatures, and pose for a selfie in front of the five-metre tall cassowary statue at the Wongaling Beach shopping centre. If you fancy a spot of hiking don’t miss the stunning Misty Mountains Trail. Don’t let the peaceful vibe fool you though – there are also loads of adrenalin-fuelled activities for daredevils, from mountain biking and jet skiing to white water rafting and skydiving.

There are several shopping centres in the area as well as lots of smaller stores and charming boutiques. You can enjoy some fine dining in one of the excellent restaurants, or perhaps treat yourself to a fresh and tasty seafood feast as you overlook the ocean.
