Would happily stay at this property again even if just for the incredible view of Canterbury Cathedral! Special mention to Rob who was incredibly friendly and welcoming!
Excellent location in the heart of the city, looking out on to the Cathedral from the back of the hotel. Good instructions from the hotel regarding parking and dropping off luggage. Parking was £13 for 24 hours in one of the council car parks which the hotel arranged for us. Breakfast was great, either continental which was included in the room rate, or Full English cooked breakfast for a supplement of £9.50 per person. Wi-Fi is free.
This small, sweet hotel right next door to the cathedral is a lovely place to stay. It’s a bit quirky; there’s no elevator & the top rooms are up quite a few stairs. But my room was big and pretty, and the (included) breakfast was delicious. My room had a shared bath, but it was right next door, spotlessly clean, & only shared with one other room – really no problem. The staff is extremely nice and helpful – on my last afternoon, as I waited for a taxi, the fellow at the desk made me tea. I totally enjoyed staying here.

Liked: Cleanliness, staff & service
The hotel is located right in the city centre so it's great for sightseeing. Our room (en-suite) was of reasonable size for a long weekend. For a longer stay one would have wanted more cupboard and drawer space. The staff were very nice and we appreciated the free bottles of water by the reception. The continental breakfast delivered to the room was of good quality and plentiful. The only downside was the noise coming from the street below, especially on a hot summer night when one wants to keep the window open. Luckily the pubs close to the hotel closed at 11pm after which it was more tranquil.
I am a regular solo traveller to Canterbury and couldn't get a room at my regular B&B so i decided to try the Cathedral Gate Hotel as I often thought it looked like an interesting place to stay.
I received a warm welcome on arrival and shown to my room which had a view to the bustling market square. My room was clean and comfortable. Canterbury has a lively, noisy nightlife which is to be expected in a busy city centre and earplugs are provided for those who require them!
The continental breakfast was delicious and the croissants served straight from the oven were perfect.
I loved the building which is around 700 years old with its sloping floors and rabbit warren like corridors!
I am looking forward to my next visit to Canterbury and will definitely be booking into the Cathedral Gate, I had a great stay and it is just a 10 minute walk from the train station!
An amazing hotel due to the staff, highly recommend. Housekeeping were fantastic such attention to detail for a small hotel.great location but really staff and level of service makes this hotel exceptional.
Loved the location next to the cathedral and center of town. The room was fine, but was on the front street and was warm and loud with street noise at all hours. If you are a light sleeper ask for a room in the back. Great continual breakfast and helpful staff.
A unique stay in the heart of Canterbury. If you like to stay in accomodation that is not the usual hotel room you will enjoy this historic property. Right next to the Cathedral. Excellent breakfast. Clean and comfortable.
Location Location Location!! Its 700 years old , it sits right infront of the Cathedral. The maze of stairs and rooftop walkway to my room with views is amazing . Bed was comfortable. Rob is entertaining and customer service was 100 stars. Please expect a 700 year old castle cottage experience, slanted doors and creeky floors.
The positives were that it was an amazing location, great staff who were very helpful at check-in, great breakfast and staff were friendly and the rooms were lovely.
Being on the front of the hotel, although earplugs were provided (which is a good thought) I am unable to wear them so was woken up a few times with passers-by late at night talking loudly and early deliveries.
We did have an option on arrival to go to the back of the hotel for a quieter room but the bathroom door wouldn't open. The other back bedroom was a twin room but the staff were happy to change over to a double if we wanted but we thought the front would have been ok.
Unfortunately if you have some mobility issues there may be a problem with stairs to rooms and the front room had less stairs.
Very cozy room, old building with uneven floors, right on the street next door to the Cathedral and close to everything, no air conditioning but a fan kept things cool, excellent staff at check-in, warned about possible overnight noise that didn’t exist, was offered a quiet room if desired, excellent breakfast provided by complimentary room service. Highly recommend
Hotel is perfectly located. Views of the cathedral from some of the rooms are SPECTACULAR. The building is ancient and quirky but beautifully kept up and spotless. Plenty of bathrooms for rooms that share them. Friendly front desk. Continental breakfast, which is included, is great.
If you are looking for something that feels historic and more like a B&B with charm rather than a hotel — and don’t have mobility issues — don’t stay anywhere else.
