Holidays in Kemi

Your last vacay feel like it was light years ago? Don't stress — book a ticket to Kemi and you'll be off in a flash!

Finland's capital city, Helsinki, sits about 600 kilometres to the south of Kemi.

Fancy a little beach therapy? Feel the sea breeze in your hair as you close your eyes and listen to the tranquil sounds of the ocean at Oulu Beach. It's the best kind of medicine, and it's totally free!

Kemi is within close reach of some pleasant natural sights. Riekkola-Valivaara Nature Reserve is 30 kilometres away and is well worth the time spent in the car.

Don't worry, you needn't miss your weekly game of golf. The Kemin Golf Club is available for friendly play.

Take the chairlift to the top of Kemi Snow Castle, delight in the snow-dusted landscape and then carve your way back to base. For even more thrills, hit the slopes at Ukkohalla.

The nearby destinations of Keminmaa and Simoniemi are worth having a look at. They're located 25 kilometres north and 25 kilometres east away, respectively. Hop in the car and see what they're all about!

About 30 kilometres to the northwest, Haparanda is a place that has lots to offer. Haparanda Kyrka, Church of Tornio and the Aine Art Museum are close by. That said, Orthodox Church and the Tornionlaakson Maakuntamuseo may be more your style.

Your eyes shouldn't get to have all the fun while you're in Rovaniemi. Give your taste buds a little attention as well by digging into some of the local food and drink. After all, you can't say you've really experienced a place until you've tasted its flavours.

This region has some unique recipes based on traditional ingredients and local tastes. You'll find berries and beef chicken are two common elements in many of the meals.

Ask a local what dish best sums up the region and poronkäristys (sauteed reindeer) will probably be among the first things they advise. Hernekeitto (pea soup) is another regional signature you might like to try.

Holiday calories don't count, right? So it's a wonderful excuse to treat yourself to mustikkapiirakka (blueberry pie)riisipuuro (rice pudding), a favourite dessert.

Is there anything more refreshing than throwing back an icy glass of beer topped off with a fluffy, white head? Quench your thirst and make friends with the locals over a round of Olvi.

Salmiakki Koskenkorva is definitely worth a try. Neat, on ice, in a cocktail? The bar person will give you some taste bud-tingling recommendations.

Attempt to knock down that pesky language barrier by learning to say a couple of expressions in the local tongue. You'll gain a more fulfilling, authentic experience and some new friends while you're at it! You may be glad you learnt 'Huomenta', which translates as 'good morning'. One more often used phrase is 'Mikä sinun nimesi on?' ('what's your name?').

Be sure to mark the 6th of December in your schedule. In Kemi this means just one thing — Independence Day. A prominent day of festivities, this is a marvellous time to visit the country.

Before you pack up and wave "Nähdään", why not spend the last bits of your holiday allowance and buy yourself some lasting reminders of Kemi?

Situated 100 kilometres to the west is Kallax Airport (LLA), the nearest terminal. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to reach it.
