    Pocket Guide: Hobart CBD

As far as capital cities go, Hobart may be small, but whoever said says size matters clearly had never been to Hobart. With its rich and grizzly history, striking architecture and natural beauty, what Hobart may lack in size it certainly makes up for in charm. Explore Australia’s smallest capital with our range of Hobart CBD accommodation.

Hobart lies on the banks of the Derwent River and its here you’ll find some of the cities liveliest suburbs, a testament to Hobart’s maritime history. Salamanca Place on Sullivans Cove is home to the Salamanca Markets, held every Saturday morning. One of the country’s best and largest outdoor markets with over 300 stalls offering fresh produce, freshly cooked treats and a great range of handmade wares.

Across the Cove is Hunter Street, home to old Georgian warehouses that have been resorted and now house a variety of restaurants and art galleries. Another of Hobart’s hotspots is Battery Point, one of the city’s oldest suburbs. Once a maritime village and filled with (drunken) sailors, the cobbled streets of Battery Point now offers visitors great pubs, cafes and superb examples of Georgian cottages and mansions. Also waterside is Franklin Wharf; no visit to Hobart is complete without fresh fish and chips purchased from one of the floating seafood stalls here.

Just north of the CBD are the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, Australia’s second oldest Botanical Gardens established in 1818. Spend an afternoon exploring these beautiful gardens, home to over 6000 species including several of Tassie’s endangered species and the world’s only subarctic plant house.

A must see for visitors to Hobart is MONA, the Museum of Old and New Art, located 15 minutes south of the CBD on the Berridale Peninsula. The largest privately funded museum in Australia, MONAis an extraordinary museum and houses an eclectic collection of permanent and changing exhibitions. Even if you’re not a huge art fan it’s worth a visit just for the building itself, three underground levels built into sheer rock.

So no matter what you’re in town for, Hobart doesn’t disappoint. Live every lastminute with our range of Hobart CBD hotels and accommodation.
