If you head 190 kilometres of Hikari, you'll discover the well-known city of Okayama.

Break free on a trip to some nearby natural attractions. 45 kilometres out of Hikari, Imosenotaki Falls is waiting to be explored. Shiraito Falls, 45 kilometres away, is another excellent spot to relax in the outdoors.

Whether you want to spend most of your day on the black runs or the beginners' slopes, you'll love the soft, fluffy snow at Geihoku Kokusai Ski Area.

Do you like the sound of the Shunan City Zoo and Toishi Hachimangu Shrine? These awesome attractions are in Kudamatsu, located just 11 kilometres west of Hikari. Or maybe Kintaikyo Bridge and Kikko Park appeal more to you? To visit them, head to Iwakuni, 25 kilometres north.

Want to go and see Ozu Castle, the Ozu Akarengakan and Garyu Sanso? Then head to Ozu, 75 kilometres away. The Ozu City Museum and Yokaichi Old Town are also close at hand and ought to be on your itinerary.

Eating is one of life's greatest pleasures, and since you're here, you probably think travel is too. Combine your enthusiasm for both by heading out and tasting the food and drink offerings at various bars, restaurants and cafés in town.

If you're scanning a menu, there's a good chance you'll see dishes featuring beef or noodles. They're two ingredients which are commonly used in the kitchens here.

Of course, you can't head home from Hikari without sinking your teeth into tempura (deep fried seafood or vegetables) or hako-zushi (square sushi). Popular with the locals and considered signature dishes, they are an essential experience for any self-respecting foodie.

You probably won't need too much persuading to eat anpan (sweet roll), a treat that'll make you want to pack everything up and settle down here for good.

It can be hard to sort the wheat from the chaff when it comes to good beers, but one brew worth tossing back is Asahi Premium Beer Jukusen. Grab a glass and bottoms up!

Neat or mixed — your bartender ought to know the nicest way to drink junmaishu. When your evening begs for something with a little more bite, this tipple does the trick!

Ask any experienced traveller and they'll tell you that the best way to get the most from your travel experience is to practise a handful of the local words and phrases. Try to say 'Ohayō gozaimasu'. It translates as 'good morning'. 'Konnichiwa' ('hello') is just one more you may need.

Do you plan to be here on the 23rd of December? You're in luck. Each year on this day, the whole country joins together for Birthday of Emperor Akihito.

Luckily Hikari will stay just where it is, so this "Sayōnara" doesn't need to be your last!

When you're set to take to the skies, give yourself ample time to get to Fukuoka Airport (FUK). Located 150 kilometres to the west from downtown Hikari, this is the nearest terminal.
