History

King George Sound near Albany was Western Australia's very first European settlement, so make sure you check out the colonial buildings while you're here. A bit later, during World War I, Albany was the departure point for many soldiers heading to Gallipoli and there are plenty of memorials and heritage centres where you can learn more about this period in Australian history.

In Albany, take in the views from the lookouts at The Gap and Castle Rock in Torndirrup National Park. You might even spot some dolphins and whales on the horizon if you're lucky.

Love a good hike? Go bushwalking through the Stirling Range National Park and take on the challenge of Bluff Knoll. And if you've still got some energy, you can climb to the summit of mighty Mount Barker.

After a bit of surf, sun and sand? Little Beach is considered one of Australia's best beaches, so it's definitely worth a looksee. Other must-visits are Middleton Beach, Wilson Inlet, Green's Pool and Elephant Rocks. But if it's lakes that you prefer, don't miss Two Mile Lake and Lake Muir.

In towns like Albany and Denmark, you'll find boutique fashion stores, galleries and charming gift shops to browse. There are also a few open air markets that you can visit on the weekend.Besides its magnificent natural attractions, the Great Southern region's biggest claim to fame is its wine. This is actually the geographically largest wine region in all of Australia, so make sure you stop in at a few wineries and taste test your way to your new favourite vino. You can also pop by some of the local olive groves and berry farms on the way.

Getting Here and Around

To get to the Great Southern region, jump aboard one of these cheap flights to Albany. Within the township of Albany, you can get around via public transport but to really explore the entire region, you'll need to hire a car.
