Holidays in Femes

Your last proper holiday feel like it was years ago? Simple — book a ticket to Femes and you'll be heading off in no time!

It sits 1,550 kilometres southwest of Madrid, the capital city of Spain.

The Cesar Manrique Foundation is situated in Arrecife, 25 kilometres to the east. This well-known attraction is certainly worth the trip.

Bring a picnic hamper and a blanket for a relaxed bite by the water at Sotavento de Jandia Beach or Papagayo Beach.

There's no need to travel for hours to witness some photo-worthy natural sights. Grab your car keys and head in the direction of Jameos del Agua Caves, 45 kilometres away from Femes, for a relaxing day. Or perhaps Los Verdes Cave tickles your fancy? You'll find it 45 kilometres away.

No keen soccer fan will want to miss a trip to Sports City of Lanzarote, located 20 kilometres away in Arrecife. Take a look at the event schedule to see when they're playing. If you miss them, why not catch the venue's second home team, the Club Deportivo Orientación Marítima?

Like the sound of Whale and Dolphin Museum and Quemada Beach? These attractions are in Yaiza, just 2 kilometres west of Femes. Or maybe Pocillos Beach and Puerto del Carmen Beach are more your thing? To see them, travel to Tias, 12 kilometres east.

Planning to head to Haria? This destination is just 40 kilometres to the northeast. If you're setting up base here, make sure you visit the Guinate Animal Park, Pardelas Park and Cesar Manrique House Museum. Also consider swinging by Guinate Tropical Park Zoo and the Aloe Vera House Museum.

Whether you prefer the opulence of Michelin stars or gnawing on a snack from a street stall, sampling the local food and drink is one of the best things about travelling. So why not tantalise your taste buds by digging into some of the region's mouthwatering offerings?

Do you enjoy yam? How about cheese? Whether you're keen on them or not, they are two essential ingredients regularly used in the cooking here.

While in Femes, eat like the locals do. That means trying a plate of ropa vieja (shredded steak in tomato sauce) or sancocho (fish soup), two of the region's signature dishes.

It won't take much to persuade you to have a nibble of frangollo (flour, milk and cinnamon dessert), a treat that'll make you want to pack up your bags and start a new life here.

Talk to any experienced traveller and they'll tell you that the simplest way to squeeze more from your time away is to try out a few of the local expressions and phrases. You'll be glad you learnt 'Mucho gusto Encantado', which translates as 'pleased to meet you'. Perhaps you'll find 'Buenas noches' easier to get your head around? It means 'good evening'.

Be sure to mark the 12th of October in your calendar. To the locals, this means just one thing — National Day. A notable day of festivities, this is a wonderful time to travel to the country.

Before you pack up your belongings and wave "Adiós", why not spend the remainder of your holiday allowance and treat yourself to some lasting reminders of Femes?

Gran Canaria Airport (LPA), the closest airport, is just 190 kilometres to the southwest from the centre of Femes. Map a route, pack your suitcase and set an alarm — and be sure not to hit the snooze button too many times!
