Starhotels Excelsior is on par with a good Hilton or Marriott. Excellent location directly across the street from Bologna Centrale, which makes arrivals and departures effortless. Staff were friendly and helpful throughout the stay. The room was very clean with a comfortable bed and good linens. Minor quirk: I had to hunt a bit to figure out the bathtub drain knob, but nothing serious. Breakfast was a highlight. Scrambled eggs and bacon, a strong bakery selection, fresh juices, yogurt, and deli items. Plenty of choice and good quality. From the hotel, it’s about a 20-minute walk to Piazza Maggiore, passing through lively streets full of shops and cafés. A solid, reliable choice for Bologna.

This entire hotel was immaculate. It is right next to the train station. Super comfortable beds and the room was big and clean. Highly recommend this hotel in Bologna

This hotel had many positive attributes. First of all the location was excellent. It was close to the main attractions, but also close to the train station. The room itself was of decent size. But I would say that it was booked as a “ triple room“. If that is a triple room, I would hate to see a single because it was still somewhat cramped. But it was aesthetic, The HVAC worked well, and the bathroom was nice. I would say the bed was quite hard, which was a major problem. But otherwise, the gym was meager, but it was spacious enough and had enough equipment to get in a good workout. I was happy with it. The breakfast on the other hand, was mid range to poor in quality. Several items, like sausages and bacon, tasted plastic like and stale. This was consistent over multiple days. But the coffee was OK and they had some other items that were okay. But the breakfast was quite a disappointment. Furthermore the main maître D of the breakfast room was not a particularly pleasant guy, and he was fairly rude on one occasion, which was a big turn off. Overall, this hotel was at least OK if not fairly pleasant. I would consider staying there again.

Clean, safe, great location, excellent breakfast, well staffed, very spacious room. My only negative is don’t get fooled by the drink and appetizer deal they have posted all round, the food is just peanuts, chips, and parm cheese- it is not the yummy food they have pictured as you would assume- kind of a bait and switch. But the hotel itself was perfect and Bologna just might be my new fave Italian city, great location for visiting other towns.
