I booked a room in this hotel with my colleague. Shorthly after we settled in our room, I noticed that he was smoking in the restroom without my knowledge. He’s from Turkey and was unaware that smoking wasn’t permitted in there or in any hotel rooms, as the smoking rules are not too strict in Turkey. ( Lets say that smoking rules are more flexible which brings smokers to this terrible point and a nonsmoker like me end up paying a fine in Europe for a smoker from Turkey.) As a nonsmoker, I didn’t think he would smoke and didn’t consider warning him in advance that smoking was prohibited in hotel rooms in the United Kingdom. However, as soon as I saw him, I informed him and had him extinguish his cigarette. Shortly after, someone came and took a picture of his cigarette butt in the toilet. Since he was unaware of the law, a warning would have been sufficient. Instead, I found that I was as a card holder fined £200. Given that he was unaware of the law, it was my responsibility to warn him, but since I don’t smoke, I didn’t think of warning him in advance. Now, he’s blaming me for not warning him and he doesn’t want to pay the fine. Because I made the booking, the fine is on my card, and I’m really frustrated. I don’t smoke and have to pay a fine for something I didn’t do. I wanted to talk to the manager but they didn’t let me talk to him and just gave me an email address to reach him. I sent an email and they didn’t even bother to reply. I’m very disappointed.
