When you see totally gorgeous landscapes plastered over every TV channel, it's hard not to be too jelly. So why not spoil yourself with a holiday in Bayahibe and experience the postcard-perfect beaches, coastal plains and forests of Dominican Republic?

Dominican Republic's capital city, Santo Domingo, is located around 120 kilometres to the west of Bayahibe.

Consider having a picnic among the sights and sounds of the ocean at Macao Beach or Bayahibe Beach.

Take some deep breaths of fresh air and contemplate the natural surrounds of Saona Island. It's located 19 kilometres away from Bayahibe. You'll also discover some quiet time at Cave of Wonders, 40 kilometres away.

Altos de Chavon Village and the Links are near the centre of La Romana, 25 kilometres to the northwest of Bayahibe. Why not go there and have a look?

Heading out and discovering the region can't get much better when your options include fun activities like mountain biking and mountain climbing.

Spending an hour or two in the outdoors can really calm the mind. If you're feeling a bit worn out, why not take some time out and go cycling or shore fishing?

Take the hassle out of travel planning and join like-minded people on some guided nature walks, wildlife safaris, cycling tours, segway tours and city walking tours.

Not only is parasailing a phenomenal way to get panoramic views of the scenery below, it also promises thrills, exhilaration and the chance to soar like a bird!

Whether you prefer to be on, in or around it, everybody loves the water! Why not add some thrills to your holiday by going swimming and snorkeling?

Check out the region's history museums. They are wonderful places to shelter in when the rain starts pelting down.

If you ask some locals about activities in the surrounding area, they'll often point you in the direction of the intriguing open-air exhibits and lighthouses.

The region has a rich history. Spend a few hours discovering the surrounding ruins, old towns, fortresses and historic palaces. Don't worry if you're struggling to find information online — the locals will no doubt have a few stories to share!

If you like to ponder what life is all about, consider visiting Bayahibe's cathedrals, temples and monasteries. While we can't guarantee you'll come to any conclusions, you're sure to at least find some peace and quiet.

There's no better way to understand a destination than to literally sink your teeth into it! You're invited to explore Dominican Republic by indulging in some of its most fabulous food and drink.

Chicken and plantains are just two popular ingredients in many of the dishes here. If you don't have a taste for them already, you will by the end of your getaway!

Don't miss the opportunity to try out la bandera (meat, beans and rice) or tostones (fried plantains). These distinctive meals are highly recommended by the locals.

Because a life without dessert isn't worth living, you should definitely indulge in some dulce de coco (coconut milk dessert). This sweet treat represents the area in just one bite.

Is there anything better than throwing back a pint of beer topped off with a perfect foam head? Quench your thirst and mingle with the locals over a round of The One.

Straight up, mixed or in a cocktail — it doesn't matter! A couple of rounds of Cuba libre will get the night started! It's a local favourite here, and it's most certainly worth trying.

Make the most of the downtime on the flight over by practising some words and phrases in the local tongue. You may be glad you learnt '¡Salud!', which translates as 'cheers/good health!'. Maybe you'll find '¡Feliz cumpleaños!' easier to get your head around? This means 'happy birthday'.

If you're lucky enough to be in Bayahibe on the 27th of February, get ready to party! Independence Day sees many of the locals heading out and celebrating.

Like all good things in life, your time here must eventually come to an end. When it's finally time to head off, say "Adiós" and spend your remaining holiday allowance on some keepsakes to take home.

Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ), the closest airport, is around 50 kilometres to the northeast from the centre of Bayahibe. Pick a route, pack your bags and set an alarm — and make sure you don't hit the snooze button too many times!
