Holidays in Ballacolla
We all know — a life full of new adventures is a life well-lived. So dig out your passport, pack your gear and say hello to Ballacolla!
It's located 95 kilometres to the southwest of the country's capital, Dublin.
Curracloe Beach and Sandymount Beach are the perfect destinations if you're interested in somewhere to enjoy ocean views.
You won't need to travel too far to experience some wonderful natural sights. Jump in the car and follow the road to Dunmore Cave, 20 kilometres away from Ballacolla, for a relaxing day. Or perhaps Lough Boora Parklands is more your style? It's situated just 40 kilometres away.
Get some exercise with a stroll around the Abbey Sense Gardens or the Sensory Gardens Dove House. If you're in the mood to eat, they're two excellent spots to lay out a rug and spoil yourself with a picnic.
Located 19 kilometres away, O'Moore Park is a favourite for Gaelic football fans. Pack a few pieces of blue and white, and time your stay with a live game featuring the home team, the Laois GAA. You can also cheer on the second home team, the Laois GAA.
Venture further afield and find out what's going on in Aghaboe, 5 kilometres to the northwest. Lots of travellers come here for Aghaboe Abbey and the Donaghmore Workhouse Museum. Alternatively, Durrow is 6 kilometres to the southeast of Ballacolla. Swing by this locality for access to the Abbeyleix Golf Club and Abbeyleix Heritage House.
Whether it's for a bit of shopping or to see the sights, locals and travellers alike often take a day trip to Kilkenny, 30 kilometres to the southeast. The Hub, Kilkenny Castle and St John's Church are all close at hand. That being said, make sure you don't pass up St Mary's Cathedral and Butler House either.
There's a whole world of amazing flavours waiting to two-step across your taste buds in Laois. With so many delicious things to eat and drink, all you need to bring along is your appetite — and perhaps a pair of stretchy jeans.
Once you grab a seat and look over a menu at a restaurant, you'll notice that mutton and pork are a few ingredients commonly found in dishes here.
Ask one of the locals for some food suggestions and Irish stew (lamb or mutton with potato, onion and parsley) will probably be the first thing that rolls off their tongue. Bacon and cabbage (pork back boiled with cabbage and potato) is another of the area's signature dishes you might like to take a bite out of.
Dinner isn't dinner without dessert, so stop worrying about counting calories and get stuck into one of the best sweet treats, sweet seedcake loaf.
Good news, beer enthusiasts. There are some lip-smacking brews to throw back here. Enjoy a glass of Murphy’s Irish Stout in a comfy bar and remember to text your pals back at home, 'Wish you were beer'.
Don't forget to mark the 17th of March in your diary. To the locals, this means just one thing — Saint Patrick's Day. An important day of celebrations, this is a wonderful time to check out the country.
Time spent exploring the picturesque Laois region is a truly unique experience, and hopefully it will have touched you with its magic. But alas, all good things must eventually come to an end.
Need to know where the closest airport is? Well, it's Shannon Airport (SNN) and you can find it 100 kilometres west.

Pembroke Hotel
100% for The Pembroke!! The staff was fabulous, welcoming and accommodating for our needs. A two minute walk to the castle. Beautiful hotel, spotlessly clean, comfortable rooms. Parking on site. We can’t say enough. Hoping to return some day. Rachel was particularly helpful.

The Club House Hotel
Perfect location to explore Kilkenny. Hotel is authentic so a bit dated but that is to be expected in an historical property. Room was clean and comfortable. Cooked to order breakfast was perfect.

Kilford Arms Hotel
Breakfast was a highlight. Several really good hot food options on the menu (I had the eggs benedict), as well as cereals, toast and fruit etc.
